Fan capacitor 250V vs 150V

I ordered a microfarad 150V capacitor but was sent one rated at 250V. Will it still work for 150V fan motor?

Yes, the capacitor's Voltage rating is the maximum voltage the cap can take. The capacitance value is the important value to consider.

Hi BJ, Thanks for the advice. However, an answer from another source did not agree with that. I was going to try it, but the other source warns that it may work from the beginning. Over time, it will burn my motor. Can you elaborate on how this voltage difference works on a fan that is wired for 110V? Thanks again.

Fan is not running

First check to see if you have power, second, check the capacitor wired to the motor. Sometimes you can visually see the capacitor has expanded. If you have a meter to read Microfarads, this is the way to go. The microfarad rating is stamped on the capacitor with a tolerance rating (+or- a % of the rating)

I'm not sure how you determined that the capacitor needs replaced without being able to check it. But the capacitor is the round tube attached inside the box. It will have several wires coming from the top. it sits down in a round hole and is held in place with two screws. Rudd usually (although not always) have gray plastic capacitors. note when you disconnect the capacitor which wires go to herm (that is your compressor) fan and common. Usually the fan is brown and the compressor is yellow or orange. there are usually two wires on the common. Note how many microfarad the capacitor is and replace with same rating. the 5 microfarad side is for the fan. I would however replace the whole capacitor.

This sounds like a bad run capacitor. If you could reach the fan and give it a slight push it would probably run. If you replace the capacitor make sure you replace it with the same microfarad rating and voltage rating which is found on the side of the old capacitor. The capacitor is usually oblong shaped and shiny aluminum colored. To change it you remove all lelectrical power from unit. You take an insulayed screwdriver and while holding the insulated handle take the screwdriver blade and touch it across all the terminals on the capacitor. You do this to discharge the capacitor as they hold a charge even after power is removed.

Mark the wires as you remove them. There will be letters on the capacitor at the top such as "C" "H" and possibly "F". Many capacicitors are "dual capacitors that have a fan motor rating (the lower microfarad rating) and a compressor microfarad rating (the higher number of the two)

If you have an analog multimeter you can check the cpacitor by placing the leads on the terminals and switching polarity. The needle on the meter should jump and slowly come back if it is good. If it does nothing it is bad or if it jumps and stays there it is bad. If the body is swollen it is bad. Hope this helps. If so please give me a good rating.

Ducane Furnace; AC condenser runs but blower fan in furnace won't turn on

The blower motor could be bad or the motor run capacitor may be bad. If you have the proper tools you can test the run capacitor yourself and replace it.

***CAUTION*** Anytimeyou are working on or around electricity you run the risk of shock and ordeath. Please consider consulting an expert before you open an electrical panelor appliance. ***CAUTION*** Capacitorshold a large electrical charge and will discharge upon contact with your skin. This is enough to stop your heart and cause death. If you are not confident ofyour abilities around these devices then please leave any testing or repairs toa professional. The capacitor is inside the unitand you have to remove the cover to see the inside of the electrical compartment. You will need to discharge the capacitor before you start working around it. Todo this take a screwdriver or other long metal tool with an insulated handleand cross both terminals on the capacitor to ground. You then remove both wiresgoing to the capacitor terminals, which on fan motors are typically brownwires. Capacitors are rated in MicroFarads (marked by a µF symbol) and have a voltage rating as well which istypically 370 volts or 440 volts. Youmust have a multimeter that can read micro farads to check a capacitor. You do that by placing one probeon the one terminal and the other probe on the other terminal and it shouldread the number of the rating, for example if your capacitor is rated likethis: 7.5µF then the fan rating should read 7.5µF (seven and a half MicroFarads). If the reading is more than 6% lower than it is supposed to be, thecapacitor is weak and needs replaced. If you read 0 (zero) then the capacitoris bad and needs replaced. Take the old one with your to match up at your localhvac supplier. A typical motor run capacitorrated at 5 µF +-6% at 370 Volts ACshamoke_0.jpg

Goodman CK42-1C Need a new Capasitor. What size? 440 40/5 or 370?

The rating should be on the capacitor, for instance 40/5-440 means you have a 40 microfarad capacitor for the compressor and a 5 mirofarad capacitor for the fan motor and it's rated for rated for 440 volts.
The capacitor should be whatever the compressor and fan calls for, but in a emergency you can use anything within + or - 10% on the microfarads but the voltage should be the same or higher than what's called for, until you can get the proper capacitor.
The higher the volts the better the insulation value of the capacitor, so you can always go to a higher voltage rating.
If you can't read the specs on the capacitor then look on the compressor and fan for the ratings. If they're not there then take the model number of the compressor and fan to the parts house and they can look it up for you.

Hello My heat pump fan is not running the motor is very hot. Not sure if it's the fan motor or the cap. i don't know how to check this.

Hello my name is Heath it will be my pleasure ot assist you. You can check the capacitor with the power off you will need an electric meter that checks microfarads. On the capacitor ther is a microfarad rating looks like a uf together if it matches within 10% its okay and the motor is bad.

I just bought a new compressor for my a/c but the store sold me the wrong capacitor. I need a dual capacitor but don't know how to read microferets to get the correct capacitor. Can you help me?

Do you still have the original capacitor for the unit. They probably gave you the size you need for the compressor. It should have the microfarads printed on the capacitor. The symbol resembles a strange looking u. Then look at the capacitor that came with the unit and get the microfarad rating for the fan. Now you will have the too readings you need to get a capacitor. The fan motor may also have the size capacitor you need printed on the data plate. Let me know if you need more help.

Need a replacement capacitor

Voltage rating doesn't matter. 250v or 330v will work.

If this is really a 2 speed original, with the 2.5Amp motor... it will NOT have a capacitor as the motor is a shaded pole unit. The three speed electrically reversible fans, have a capacitor, which can either be in the switch housing/ oil reservoir, or the top of the motor housing, depending on year of manufacture.

The compressor fan does not spin and sometimes it spins backwards

Your capacitor is definitely the culprit here.
It should be a dual capacitor. Meaning it has 3 terminals on one capacitor. "C" "H" and "F" would be the markings for power in,"C" out to fan "F" and out to compressor "H".
It also has a mfd(microfarad) value on the capacitor as well as a VAC rating of 370 or 440 volts ac. A 440 VAC can be used in place of a 370vac.
The other specs may be something like 40/5 or 35/5 or 40/7.5 etc.
The capacitor replacement should be exact as far as the microfarad rating is concerned.( eg. 40+5).
The money requested through various sites is just that....various. These dual caps may sell around 30-50 dollars for a quality capacitor. If you wish to spend the $118 I will sell you all as many as you would like.

Mitsubishi Mr Slim mini split outdoor unit fan.

Check the capacitor. Rating must be within 90% of rated microfarads. If it is a dual capacitor test between C and FAN. Set your meter to read microfarads (uF).
