Question about Ryobi 30 Cubic Centimeter Curved Shaft Gas Trimmer

Ryobi CS30 Spool Retainer wont come off!

I can't unscrew the Spool Retainer off! I've only used the trimmer 2 or 3 times. The manual says to screw it CLOCKWISE to take it off, and i've tried that (to the point of throwing things). I've also tried counter-clockwise, just in case. The thing is stuck. Is there some trick?

Figured it out. Well, actually, my hammer figured it out. Yes, I resorted to beating the big black "screw" with my Estwing. One good knock and the thing spun right off.

The reason I was taking it off was because there was no more line out of the holes. I assumed it had all been extended....but no. One of the lines was stuck underneath itself (like, when you wind a hose and it overlaps itself, making it stick and not come out). The other side had "melded" itself to the spool. I guess it got hot and melted to the plastic of the spool. I was able to get both sides loose, but i didn't have enough line to trim anything. All that work for nothing.

No trick - sounds like it is stuck!
Can you take it back?

If no - well - keep trying :(

Are you taking if off to put on other head attachment?

How to replace trimmer line ?

1. Remove the cap on the trimmer head, it unscrews.

2. The spool comes off, and on the inside of the spool there is a small hole, this is where you will start your trimmer line. It it will hold it in place while you wrap it. There is also arrows on the spool showing the direction that you need to wrap your spool.

3. Insert the line in the hole and start to wrap the line in the directions of the arrows, try to keep the line in rows, or else the line may bind and you will have to do it all over again.

4. Feed the line through the retainer and reinstall the spool by lining up the retainer and the slot on the outside portion on the trimmer head, the screw back on the trimmer head and you will be ready to trim.

Ryobi CS30 straight shaft. I can not get the string head off to replace the line.

There should be a half sphere shaped object over the spool of string. Twist off in a counter clockwise motion and the spool will come off so that you can replace the line.

Good fix, mrfixit-jerr! Also, if you remove the rear cover (4 screws) you can stabilize the crankshaft by inserting a screwdriver between the lobe of the shaft and the counterweight.
