Not normally, just set the thermostat to Defrost or Zero depending on the make. Most fridges have a built-in heating coil to aid in deprosting.

SOURCE: NEFF K4663 fridge. the freezer

The defrost board is not functioning properly.;

When the freezer section gets cold and reaches its required cooling temperature, after that the frost on freezer section starts defrosting and the cooling fan in the freezer section blows this cool air from freezer to fridge. But if the defrost cycle does not start then over ice will get collected on freezer ventilations and that will block the air passing section from freezer to fridge, so the freezer gets cool but fridge section does not cool.Try manual defrost by unplugging the refrigerator from main power outlet for 4 hours then reconnect it and check, if the same problem is noticed again,. If yes then its defrost board problem. The defrost board located in the back of fridge section. You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com or from online sears part site. ------------- Thank you.

That way, you can use the fridge to keep foodstuffs frozen while you deal with the freezer.
Are you thinking of defrosting method for your freezer or fridge? Then check this out.
Always switch off and unplug the freezer before cleaning or defrosting.
Load the contents of your freezer into large dustbin bags and cover the bags with a duvet or blanket. The food should stay frozen for several hours. But use a cool box for ice cream or soup which melts quickly.
After defrosting, wash fridges and freezers with a solution of two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda to 1 liter (2 pints) of warm water-it removes lingering smells.
Rub the inside of your freezer with glycerine, available from chemists, after it has defrosted. When you next have to defrost it, the ice will come away from the sides more easily.
Use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to **** up any water left on the floor.
If you do not like defrosting, you can always pay more for a frost-free freezer which never needs it. www.victorwod1234.blogspot.com

Fridge fine, freezer defrosting

What is the model number? I believe you may have a problem with a defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control. Will need to manually defrost the fridge by placing hot water in the freezer area with the door shut and the power to the fridge disconnected for a few hours. Then we can try to find the cause

Build up of frost in freezer and fridge not getting cold. Defrosted everything over night and plugged back in. Both freezer and fridge working now. Advanced defrost timer manually and fridge shut down. How...

Hi,
Frost accumulating on the freezer is an indication of a defrost failure. It likely has one of three failures.
1 Bad defrost heater.
2 Bad defrost termination switch.
3 Failed defrost timer
In order to confirm, which has gone wrong manually advance this refrigerator into a defrost cycle. This is done by doing the following in order:
1. Disconnect power to the unit for at least 30 seconds
2. Turn the thermostat to off position (leave it off)
3. Reconnect power
In a few minutes, if you can hear a hissing noise in the freezer or see a red glow from the heater, it
indicates the timer is not advancing and will need to be replaced.
If nothing happens when the defrost timer is manually advanced, some voltage and resistance checks will need to be made. I recommend having a technician make these checks.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

The most common issue with this is a failed defrost heater. You can repair this yourself and save a couple hundred dollars, I know this unit very well. If you want to fix this your self we can help you.

Fan in freezer is making a real bad sound...... griding like it may be struggling to to stay running

This can be caused by frost accumulation on or aroundthe freezer fan Icing . And due to this no cooling will be in fridge compartment.
Unplug power and . defrost it. And after some times, switch on fridge.
This is due to auto defrost switch malfunction. keep temp setting at 5 degree and check auto defrost (if your fridge having that option) is working. If not you have to replace PCB. Thanks.

Freezer works fine but fridge has lost its temperature.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp

..
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Fridge is warm, freezer works.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
