Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

Incorrect oven temperature

When I set the oven to 350, it might heat to 250. If I turn it up to 375, it might jump to say 400. The oven does cycle off, but I have to watch closely because everything burns or doesn't cook. I think it is the thermostat. Is there anyway calibrate it? This is a very old Kenmore stove.

The top element in the oven burn't right thru near the oven's back wall. I've replaced it with an element ordered from Sears, one they looked up as the replacement. It installed identical to the one I removed. Since the replacement, my wife complains that the oven takes longer to preheat and the temperature is running hotter than the requested temp. And will fluxuate more than previous when the temp is adjusted. I have not checked the element in the base of the oven as to it's integrity.

    Thanks for your time,

SOURCE: Oven won't heat accurately

Brad, your right on track. But I'd look toward the sensor first (The computer only does what the sensor tells it to do). I'll need the model number to find part numbers to help you further. The model number is on a sticker located on the oven body behind the lower drawer. It'll start with 3 digits then a decimal point the more digits (xxx.xxxxxxxx).

SOURCE: Oven won't heat accurately

The main problem is the manufacturer's fault in the setting accuracy of the temperature, i mean when the manufacturer has to adjust the temperature into the required temp it does not set to the required one. This is called "calibration" in engineering, the best for you is to tell the manufacturer to replace or keep it.

SOURCE: Tappan Oven overheats!!

If you have electronic controls, you'll need either the temperature probe (about $60.00) or the clock (about $150.00). You can test the temperature probe from behind the machine. It should read about 1080 ohms at room temperature. if the probe is good, replace the clock.

If you have mechanical oven controls, you need a new thermostat. Is the too high temp consistent? (i.e. runs at 375F +/- 25F?) If so, you can usually adjust the thermostat **** to read closer to the actual temperature.

My kitchen aid superba programable oven heats to the correct temp i set sometimes, and sometimes not, meaning if i set it for 375 it will heat to like 250 and then stop, i unplugged it for 1/2 hour to...

It may just be the thermostat going bad. The thermostat tells the oven temperature controller what the temperature is inside the oven. As they go bad they send back incorrect signals. They are relatively simple repairs.

I have a kenmore mark 1 oven in my apartment and the oven temperature says 1-9 instead of going in degrees such as 100, 350 etc. I am wondering which number stands for which heat?

This Conversion table is from the old Gas Mark scale
I'm thinking it should be right or at least pretty close.
You could also get a cheap ($5-7) oven thermometer from local grocery store.
Put it inside oven to check actual temp achieved.

Gas mark Fahrenheit Celsius
1⁄4 225° 107°
1⁄2 250° 121°
1 275° 135°
2 300° 149°
3 325° 163°
4 350° 177°
5 375° 191°
6 400° 204°
7 425° 218°
8 450° 232°
9 475° 246°

High limit kicks out fryer and pilot light can

Since you've mention the pilot light goes out at 400 degree F, then we are talking a gas Deep Fryer. The deepfryer usually use at 350 degree F for chips or else. Because the oil will start breaking down its quantity of frying very quickly over that temperature. Most people set at 350 degree F. Now we comes back to your problem, First you should have a deep fryer thermometer they espcially made for deep fryer, (You only mention 400 or better ) that make me think you're only guessing. Knowing the temperature is very important, most Hi limit is set at 420 degree F.
To me it seen the Hi Ltd control is working and that is why it cutting out the pilot when it reach its limit but we don't know what temperature that when the hi limit cutting out at.
When you have a thermometer, put it in the cold oil and turn the temperature to 100 degree F to see what the temperature control cutting out at. slowly increase your setting until it cutting out at 350 degree F . If you set at 250 degree F and the thermometer already reaching 350 degreen F then don't go any further , your temperature control is defective and need to be change a new one.
This is only the first step, you still have to check out the Hi ltd control to see how good its condition is,so far your information say it cutting out at 400 or better. But you've to be sure, because it is a safety control. Hope that will help you , God Bless.

My Kitchen Aid Supuerba top covection oven will heat to set temp 350-400 then drop over 100 degree's but still read on digital display 350 or 400

how do you know it is dropping 100 degrees ?
If the set temperature is 350-400 the heaters will work untill the thermostat will read that the temperature is reached - after that the heaters will shut down and the temperature will drop...and after few minutes when the temperature goes below thw set point (in this case 350-400) the heaters will turn on again - this will happen for the duration of the timing you have selected (example 45 minutes)

Amana Convection oven not controlling temp

I have just checked the baking guide in the manual and have found that it may not be us after all. (Maybe this is why they telll us to read the whole manual. Well, I never have) According to the cooking time for Baking, the range is very extensive. For example, an angel cake at 350 could take from 28-50 minutes, buscuits at 375-400 could take 8-16 minutes, layer cakes at 350-375 could take 25-40 minutes, pound cakes at 325-350 could take 45-70 minutes and fresh pies at 400-450 could take 35-60 minutes. Basically, the baking directions on the box means absolutely nothing to use Amana oven owners. We have no choice but to cook our food or baked goods until they are cooked, whenever that may be. :) Linda
