Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Traffic info (or lack of) with Nuivi 610T

The 610T comes with "FM Traffic Alert". Mine, new 4 weeks ago, has never indicated any such notification and scanning for providers finds nothing. Garmin don't seem to be able to help.
Any suggestions?

Re: Traffic info (or lack of) with Nuivi 610T

No, I Iive close to the M11, A14, A11 in North Essex, England...and the problem continues. Really I've given up. Having tried mounting the arial in different positions in the car (both horizontally and vertically behind the front windscreen) I still have not "linked" with Trafficmaster and the only subscriptions showing are one for the USA and one for France. Fat lot of good that does me!!!!

It does not alert me of traffic jams

¹Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or (READ THIS---)----> as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. (AND THIS------>Traffic content not available for all areas. See for traffic coverage areas and for program License Agreement containing complete terms and conditions.

Sounds like either the system is not getting the updates or else the updates are not being provided, but either way something is not happening someplace. Or maybe you have the traffic system shut off because it was annoying you one day.

Hope this helps

I cant install traffic fm

The 255W does not include traffic, if you got the Traffic cable additionally all that you would need to do is plug into you cars 12v power source and you should be receiving updates. You can check this by going to Tools > Settings > Traffic > and see if you have any info there.

Hope this helps!

I just bought the garmin nuvi 265wt. I tried to activate the free lifetime traffic that comes with the unit but when I touched the screen to enable the traffic it told me I first must go to www.garmin/fm...

Check the information that came in your box. With my TomTom Lifetime Traffic and Maps, there was an "activation" number on one sheet of paper. I had to activate (per instructions) before I could enable the lifetime goodies.

Where do I go to register my garmin and get the traffic set up

Your Garmin already has the lifetime subscription on it and does not need to be set up. For the traffic icon to come up in the top left you need to have it plugged into your car power cord which has an FM receiver on it and you need to be where there is an FM signal. Not all cities have an FM signal but they are adding new ones all the time. If you do not see the traffic icon you may not be where a signal is yet. I have a 255WT and where i live does not have a signal but when I travel to other cities I find the FM signal and it has helped me a lot to go through traffic. For proof of your lifetime traffic go to the bottom of your menu page when it is plugged into your car power cord and plugged in to the power source. You will find a traffic icon. Click on it and you should see a lifetime subscription. You can also add other traffic subscription on this page if you are travelling to other countries. Hope this helps. Good luck!

How do i activate traffic alert

Question? Is traffic alert available where you live? If not then you will not be able to get it. Traffic alert is available in certain places only, and usually cities with a population of couple million or more. Hope this helps.

Our garmin product, Nuvi 465 T is telling us to go to to get a subscription code, so that we can enter a unit ID to get a free subscription to FM traffic. Every time we go there,...

Yes, you do not have to enter a subscription code for this unit because it comes with a lifetime subscription. All you have to do is be sure you plug your adapter in first, and also be in an area where there are traffic broadcasts, when your unit powers up, you will see a small green traffic symbol in the upper left corner of the screen. this indicates that it is picking up the signal. If it turns gray, then you do not have a signal in that area. Again, be sure you are in an area that has traffic broadcasts, plug in adapter first, then you should be fine. Again, it is not necessary to enter a code. Good luck and have fun!

Garmin 265WT - fm traffic

I called Garmin about the same issue. If you will turn it on and are in one of the 50 metro areas covered it will automatically receive trraffic updates. That is exactly what I did and it worked and I got the same message you did. You do NOT have to sign up, get a code, or anything. Just turn it on in one of the areas and watch for the traffic symbol on the uper left hand side.

Traffic reciever not working with Nuvi 650

I have the Nuvi 650 (for about a year now) and just bought the GTM-20 traffic receiver. This receiver came with the "free lifetime" traffic service. (Keep in mind that at first use, the receiver is "mated" to the Nuvi for "life". You can't move it to another GPS).

In any case, the GTM-20 manual says you only need to plug the two together and the two units will establish their connection automatically.

Mine didn't work.

I called Garmin and after a LOOONG hold time, finally got through to a tech rep. She advised that I connect my 650 to my PC and login to Garmin to check for upgrades. She was right. When Garmin offered this "free service for life", they had to issue a new software update so the Nuvi would accept it. She also advised I check the offered "optional" upgrades as well, and look for any that offered "traffic" in the title. There was one of those upgrades, also. (almost everything else was optional "voices" downloads).

I downloaded both the primary software update and the optional traffic update to the 650. It installed them automatically. She also advised "just to be sure" to do a hard reset on the 650. That involves turning the unit off. Then, while pressing a finger in the lower right corner of the screen, turn the unit back on. The unit will ask if you really want to risk losing personal data.. Say "yes", and the unit will do a clean reboot with the upgrades.

Reconnect the receiver and the 650. It may take awhile for the units to acquire the satellites, traffic signals, and set the internal key, but it did work. You may not see the "traffic icon" at the first map screen. If you go to the tools or setup screen, you should see the traffic icon at the lower right of the screen. Press that, and if you are in a coverage area, it will show traffic in the area.

If you have the first version of the GTM-20, you will have a set of LEDs on the power plug that show power and traffic signal info. If you have the new version of the GTM-20, there are no lights on the plug.

A couple of side notes. If you have a lot of "favorites" saved in your 650, you may lose those on the hard reset. To avoid that, put your 650 on the PC, go to your file explorer, and go to the "Nuvi" drive. Click on that, and find the the folder and file called "gpx". Copy that to a folder or desktop on your PC. After you do the nuvi reboot, reconnect the PC and copy the file back into the folder on the 650. That will restore your favorites.

Also, make sure you are in a covered area. If you are not, it won't find the signal and will not show you any traffic icon.

The first time after the upgrade and reboot, the Garmin rep said it could take anything from several minutes up to nearly an hour for it to establish the link (mine was about 10 minutes). After that, it will come right on.

A lot of information here, but the first thing is to get the latest software upgrade for the 650. I had upgraded mine about 4 months ago, and it was already two versions out of date. The newer version had the fix for traffic. I would start there.
