Question about Philips 37MF231D 37 in. LCD Television

5 Answers

The tv randomly will display the menu. You can't get it to go off, unless you turn off the tv. The appearance of the menu display has come quicker over the past few months. We tried the download, this worked for awhile, then problem came back. A local service shop said that it needed a skeeter board replaced? Cost of repair was around 400.00. Since then my friend has given the tv to me to look at. i used to work on tvs. I'm jyust trying to help him out and maybe fix the tv cheaply by replaceing the eprom, or the microprocessor board, if available. I currently have no schematic but can download one. I've had the tv playing for a total of 10 hours over the past 3 days. Tv has been working fine. Any ideas and part numbers, and best place to get parts? Thanks Jerry! Stonecat316@aol.com

I appreciate your solution to my issue. Have you fixed this model of tv with this randomly appearing menu, or is the capacitor replacement just a fix for the known power supply problems of not turning on? The tv comes on fine for now,it's just that the menu will pop up and stay on according to my friend. I've not seen it do it yet. Your solution seems to sound like you actually fix tv's on a regular basis. I've had other general solutions posted, but none like this. Thanks Jerry!

Hi...

have you ever try to reset this unit,

To reset your TV unit you just unplug the cord from the wall socket for five hours, the purpose for this is to drain the stored current in the memory IC, in order to erase the stored command. Then after five hours plug it again. To see what ever

Good luck !!!

I have read another solution which may indicate the light engine has failed and will likely need replacing. The cost is quite expensive. $1500 range and apparently the part is no longer available from LG. Best you might do is get an estimate to repair just to be sure.

Samsung TV HPS4253 menu continues to pop up randomly

Its probably the buttons (hopefully) you can open the tv and disconnect this control panel most of the time. Sometimes the remote (IR) signals go through this board. If the problem continues without board connected, its likely the main board = more expensive (100-300 $ part)

Black menu-like box randomly appears, covering the picture

This is a problem with closed-captioning. What you are seeing is a closed captioning box with no captioning in it. Usually this is being accidentally transmitted by the cable company "head end". Just make sure your closed captioning function is completely turned off. if you are seeing it randomly, it may well be coming from your cable company. Is it just on certain channels?

Turns on and off by itself unless I'm using the menu

This is just a suggestion because I had a similar problem with a Zenith TV many years ago. It was something in the tuner/remote sensor circuit that made the TV randomly turn on or off. You may have to have it repaired by a technician, but here is something to try: Put tape over the remote sensor eye on the front of the TV. This is to make sure some stray light is not turning off the TV.

Black square in the middle of the picture

You have the set configured to display "text 1 or Text 2" in the closed captioning menu. You will need to turn closed captioning off to get rid of this box.
