SOURCE: iphone screen wont rotate

If you are on iOS 7, try and open the control center by sliding your finger from the bottom of the screen upwards. Then take a look at the most right toggle and see if it is enabled or not. It should be disabled

What is the meaning of the various symbols on the line with blutooth and charge percent etc. In particular, the symbol with a lock with a circle around it?

The lock with a circle around it means you have locked the screen rotation. This means when you rotate the device, the screen will not rotate.

If you want to turn off the screen lock, just swipe up on your iPhone screen and turn it off in the panel that appears.

More information is available on the Apple website: https://support.apple.com/en-us/ts3805

Hope that helps!

Screen will not rotate and the lock is turned off

Hi

... when you say the "lock is turned off" ... do you mean the screen locking after a set amount of time?

Allowing a screen to rotate is driven by the application. The application has to be developed to allow screen rotation. In some cases like the app from SpeedTest (which you can find on the App Store) only functions in "portrait" mode while the home button is on the bottom ... however you rotate the phone ... 90 degrees or 180 degrees, the screen stays fixed.

Hope this helps,
Ron.

Why won't my Iphone 5 wont turn sideways

This is because you've got the screen rotation lock on
To turn it on or off, do the following:
  1. In iOS 7 or higher, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal Control center. (In iOS 6 or lower, double tap the home button on the front of the iPhone or iPod touch. This will reveal the fast app switcher row of apps at the bottom of the screen)
  2. In iOS 7, tap the lock-and-curved-arrow icon. If it is white, it's on; black and it's off
  3. In iOS 6 or earlier, swipe left to right to reveal the Music app, music player controls, and on the far left, an app with a curved arrow in it (if the lock is turned on, you'll see the lock inside the arrow)
  4. To turn screen rotation lock on, tap the curved arrow icon so that the lock appears
  5. To turn screen rotation lock off, tap the icon so that the lock disappears
  6. When you're done in either version of the iOS, single tap the home button and you'll be returned to normal operation of your device.

How do i get the keypad working and how do i disable rotation lock?

I am not 100% sure what you mean by get the key pad working. If the keyboard on your iphone is not working I would try rebooting the iphone. To do that...hold down both the home button and the lock button for about 20-30 seconds. You will see the screen go black and reboot.

To disable the rotation lock, double tap the home button. From there on the "multitasking bar" swipe your finger from left to right to reveal the audio controls. The rotation lock button is on the left of the audio controls....just tap it to toggle the screen rotation lock on and off
