First run a virus scan to see if this problem is caused by a virus on your system. If it scans clean then reboot with the Windows installation cd in the drive. Select the repair option. Once this is done your system should run fine again. Hope this helps.

How can i reinstall the ntoskrnl.exe when it is corrupt

Assuming a couple of things:
1. Your OS is Windows XP
2. This is the error message you are getting -
"Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Winnt_root\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

To reinstall notskrnl.exe, do this:
  • Start the computer by using your Windows XP CD-ROM. Press any key to boot from the CD.
  • After the setup files are finished loading press R to repair using Recovery Console.
  • When you are in the recovery console, select the installation to log on to (usually number 1), and then press ENTER.
  • Login to the Administrator account by typing the password for this account, and then press ENTER.
  • At the recovery console command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    For Uni-Processor systems: expand <cd-drive>:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ <hd-drive>:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    For Multi-Processor systems:expand <cd-drive>:\i386\ntkrnlmp.ex_ <hd-drive>:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Note In these two commands, the <cd-drive> placeholder represents the drive letter of your CD drive, and the <hd-drive> placeholder represents the drive letter of the hard disk on which windows is installed.
  • If you receive a prompt to overwrite the file, press Y.
  • Type exit, and press ENTER at the command prompt.
  • You should now be able to boot up properly.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe Operating System is Microsoft Server 2003 R3

ntoskrnl.exe is a main file that is part of windows. if you have the windows server 2003 R2 cd you can boot up with that and there will be an option to "repair" once you get so far. I would try this first as it is your best bet and can replace missing files.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop. Windowsroot system32 ntoskrnl.exe appeared following a System Restore and I cannot use System Restore to try another date as I cannot get into Windows. How do I solve this?

You need the recovery disc to resolve this issue:

Boot from the recovery disc and select "R" to repair your Operating System.

If you're already in teh Recovery Console, select the Operating System you wish to fix and type the administrator password or just press enter.

Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32 (here I presume that the CD is in D: and XP is installed in C:\Windows)

If it already exists, you will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file. Type Y and press <Enter> to overwrite the file.

Type exit and press enter and reboot your computer.

System should boot to windows this time.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 desktop. I have been unable to start Windows and receive the error message: Windows root system32/ntoskrnl.450L exe failure. How do I correct this problem?

You will have to boot in to repair console from XP cd and run it so it can try to repair the Operating system. Put in cd and restart and if it does not ask to boot to cd u have to change boot order in bios to boot to CD rom first. If all this fails you have to reinstall windows. Hope this helps.

That will work, but you may also consider using that windows xp disk to upgrade, it'll fix the problem plus give you an upgrade. Kinda kills two birds with one stone.
