If you mean to apply a password specifically to access the configuration pages of you router...

  1. Look for a "Security" settings section in your router configuration. It will allow you to create a password for access to the router itself.
  2. Most router configuration pages may be accessed by opening a web browser and entering the IP address of: 192.168.1.1 ... or some slight variation. For example 192.168.2.1
  3. If you completely forget your router password, there is typically a reset button on the router which must be held down for a few seconds usually with a pen tip. REMEMBER this will reset all router settings and you'll be starting from scratch.

If by adding a password, you mean to secure access to your wireless router by other internet users:
  1. Connect your laptop or computer directly to the router to avoid losing connection once you enable security.
  2. Go to the same "Security" section and enable WEP. Wireless Encryption Protocol.
  3. Follow the instructions for enabling WEP and record your encryption keys. The keys are intentionally very long and difficult to remember.
  4. This will require users accessing your wireless to have an encryption key you provide.
  5. Others may see the availability of your wireless router, but they will not be able to use your router services without a key.
  6. On your computer(s) at home you will need to enable WEP for the connection to your router and enter a key for them.
If you no longer have it, I would also recommend searching the internet for a manual on your router.

Type in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 depending on the router, then log in with your credentials, default would be Username:Admin Password:Password then go to settings, then change the encryption type to the one your desire.

Forgotten password for wifi network

Which operating system ??
Your wireless Internet password is the encrypted security pass phrase that was set up when you installed your wireless router.

Your router allows you to access the Internet.
If you have access to more than one wireless network, you may need to remember multiple passwords.

If you happen to forget one password, you have two options: reset your password or locate the current password.

Windows 7 allows you to view the security characters of all your wireless network passwords.
Click the "Wi-Fi" network icon located on the Window's taskbar.

Right-click the name of your network's "SSID" name and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

Click the "Security Tab." The network security key is now visible but unreadable.

Click the "Show Characters" check box and this will reveal your wireless password.

Reset My WiFi Password

Wireless networking is a common feature in homes and offices.
Wireless routers provide access to a single Internet source, and wireless passwords ensure that only select users can access the network.

If a password is forgotten or lost, the password can be recovered or reset by accessing the router's Web-based settings menu.

Most wireless routers also have a reset button, which is capable of returning the router to its default settings which includes resetting the password.

Connect to your Wi-Fi or attach your computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
Open your Web browser.

Enter the default address of your router.
The default address is listed in your user manual or on the product website.

Linksys and 3Com routers typically use "192.168.1.1" while Netgear routers use "192.168.0.1."
Enter your username and password.

Many routers use "admin" for the username and password by default.
Locate the wireless security settings. Disable the wireless security.

Reset to Factory Defaults

Locate the reset button on your router.
Typically the reset button is a small indented hole on the back of the device.

Insert a long thin object such as a paperclip and hold down the reset button for 30 seconds to revert the router to its factory default settings.

Locate the wireless security settings and add security as necessary.

When i try to connect to a secured wireless connection my laptop asks for a device ownership password, that is either printed or labeled on the device. i cannot find where this password is?

The password is not a preprinted password, it is a security password on your router. You need to log into the router and check your wireless security to see what you have used. If wireless security password is blank (use wap personal security), enter a password and then use the same for your computer when asked.

Please leave feedback if this solves your problem, otherwise send more information about your problem.
