WHIRLPOOL TOP LOAD WASHER MAKING GRINDING NOISE FOR AGITATION

Model LSR8233EQ1 Alright, I have a whirlpool ultimate care heavy duty plus washing machine, top loading. Had problems with it like not spinning properly, towels getting wrapped around center, burning smell and noise. Someone came in and replaced the dogs for the agitator, but when in doing so broke the o-ring for the tub ring cap. After a couple of loads a bad burning smell came from the motor and loud noise. I figured water may have gotten down to the motor and burned it out. So I order and installed a new motor and here are the symptoms:
When water finishes filling the tub, the 'agitation' starts by going into a violent spasm where the center piece keeps rotating one direction and tangles towels around it. At the same time there is a very loud grinding type of sound. When I open the lid, it will continue unless I push the knob in, turn it a notch, and then close the lid for normal agitation. It will continue to wash normal until the rinse cycle. The water will drain, fill back up, and the same violent 'agitation' will begin. If I pull the knob and skip a notch, the machine will just sit there and tick until it reaches the spin cycle. Then continues like normal.
So....What do I do? I think the towels choked out the motor before by strangling the center piece.(called the??). I'm hoping its not the transmission. Maybe the other half of the agitator? The clutch assy? That's about all that's left to replace, I guess. Any suggestions would sure help. Thanks

When you put the motor in did you replace the coupler between the motor and transmission? When fixing the agitator you need to get the agitator repair kit, It has seals, dogs, thrust plate, cam bearing and seals. The upper agitator is supposed to move only in one direction to get the clothes to move down towards the agitator. Do not overload machine. I have one of these and after 12 years I finally had to install this upper repair kit because the upper agitator quit moving. You may have an agitate cam that is going bad inside the transmission

My whirlpool ultimate Care II Heavy Duty Super Capacity Plus washer Very slightly agitates and don't spin dry

The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

Find serial and model number

Normally on top load machines open the lid and look toward the back hinge area inside the lid. It is usually on the back there. It may also be posted on a white sticker on the back of the machine.

Whirlpool Ultimate Care Heavy Duty Washer will not spin

It sounds like you have a broken motor coupling. This is a very inexpensive and simple repair.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top
The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.
