Question about Sta Rite Sr333lp - Max E Therm - Pool & Spa Heater - Dual Electronic Iginition Lo - Nox - 333,000 Btu - Propane Gas

1 Answer

Pool heater runs but the air coming out of the unit is cold.

The spa heater is connected to the same propane tank and is heating fine. The digital reader on the pool heater says r3 when you turn it on and then flashes 181 and 183 as error messages. The heater sounds like it is running properly but no heat is coming out.

R3 is not one of the actual error codes, but is part of the computer system. What you can try to do is reset the computer in the heater. First you will need to turn the heater off, then turn off the circuit breaker for the heater. Wait about 15 to 20 minutes then reverse the order, the circut breaker then the heater. Try and start the heater and watch the display panel.

If they R3 reappears, then the problem is the control board for the heater and it will need to be replaced.

Hi pameroo,

I see that you are having issues with your Pool Heater.

I have hear Links that may help you regarding your concern, you also mentioned that it runs about 10mins then stops and a red light says it is heating then the unit comes back on after 30 seconds but there is a heavy smell of propane.

maybe you can check all the connection if there will be any leaks on the machine.
make sure that the line to the Gas tank does not have leaks, turn Off of the Gas connection before doing any troubleshooting...

Manual/Service Manual

See the Links above, the third Links has the Owners manual and the service manual for the Troubleshooting that can help check with your concern.

I hope that this helps.

My pool heater suddenly stopped working. It sparks, it calls for heat but then I get a ILO ignition lock out reading. Can this be fixed? please advise. Thanks

Propane...Make sure you have 30% in the tank (and the valve is open on the correct tank). Natural gas...You may have carbon/debris on the ignitor.

Pool Heater. Hayward H100ID Starts fine and heats for about 5 minutes. Then heat stops. You can feel the blower its just cold air.

It sounds like your pool heater is not firing. I would check several things: the burner might be blocked and clogged, the gas valve might need to be replaced, the direct spark module might be malfunctioning, or the combustion blower might be cleaned. One of these is probably the issue. A service man can repair all of these problems.

The heater come on and cycles on and off, but the water no longer reaches the correct temperature. Pool techicina has replaced the thermostat and disassembled and cleaned something, but it still will not...

This could be the flow rate / value...maybe the unit is under rated in its BTU value. But if it did work fine and heat the water ok then its not thing would be the system control switches...each of these needs to be tested one by one to see if it cutting out the system too early...failing that it is the flame being produced and the heat value is cold see if the flames are blue or is fine nice and hot yellow is too cold to heat the water passing through

Hayward Heater Problem ''AO'' error. H400IDH

Thank you for posting your question here on

It sounds as if the air activated switch the tube you mention attaches to is not working. Pull the two wires from it and connect them to simulate the switch closing. Start up the heater to see if you get ignition. If so, replace the switch.

Hooking up a pool heater to propane.

A pressure regulator and pipe or hose. Whoever is selling you the tank/propane should be able to help you size everything based on the tank hook-up and tank pressure. The heater nameplate will tell you the proper inlet gas pressure that the regulator will need to reduce the tank pressure to.

Hayward Pool Heater is not working. Fan turns on, but that is it.

I had the exact same problem. The propane guy had to come back and put the regulator right by the heater instead of being on the tanks. Did this and boom heat. This was after 6 days of calling and calling hayward tech and service guy. Hopefully it will continue to work :/
