Re: Application & Driver Recovery is missing

Need a bit more info on what type of computer you have, most of your drivers can be found at

Unfortunately if you need the applications back that came with the computer you will have to order a copy of the disk from Emachines. Most manufactures charge about $30 for a copy. If you need to order the disk you can try their chat support or call them at 1-408-273-0888.
It is a long distance call so you may want to try chat support first.

No sound

No-Sound Problem?

Things You'll Need:

  • Driver and Application Recovery Cd's
  • Updated sound driver software

Check the Speaker Connections and Volume Control Settings

Verify that the lack of sound is not due to faulty speaker connections. A simple way to test it is to substitute the speaker connection with headphones and see if you get any sound.

Open the volume control window by clicking your "Start" button and then "All Programs." Click "Accessories," then "Entertainment," then "Volume Control." Alternatively, just click on the speaker icon that's in your System Tray.Check the volume and mute settings. If any of the mute check boxes have been checked, un-check them. If this doesn't work, read on.

Perform a System Restore If Necessary

If the sound has been audible from your computer's speakers and is suddenly lost, you may need to perform a System Restore. Click on the " Start" button and then "All Programs."

Click on "Accessories," then "System Tools," then "System Restore."

Complete the System Restore Wizard. If this doesn't work, read on.

Delete and Reinstall the Original Sound Drivers

Deleting and reinstalling your sound driver may resolve the problem. Your sound driver may have been corrupted or may be missing. The result of this is that the restore utility menu won't be available. For Windows XP, follow these steps.

Click on your "Start" button. Click on "Control Panel" and then "System." Next, click on "Hardware," then "Device Manager, then "Sound, Video and Game Controllers."

Click on a sound device named in the Device Manager, and then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Click "OK" in the window that appears. Remove all the listed sound devices i this way EXCEPT Audio Codec and Legacy Audio Drivers.

Restart your computer. Reinstall the deleted drivers using the Driver and Application Recovery Cd's that came with your Windows XP system.

Visit your computer manufacturer's official website. Check for any updated sound driver software for your sound card. If any, download them along with the installation instructions.

How do I create a factory default recovery disc where do I find the area at

Not knowing the age and model of your emachine I will give you a few choices.

If it's an older series like the picture above you should be able to go into the start menu, all programs and then either PC Help and Tools or Emachine-Recovery manager. Then select Recovery Disk Creator.

If it's a newer model, Emachines and Gateway were bought out by Acer over a year ago and now use the Acer style recovery. Select Star, All Programs, then Emachine Recovery Manager. Load the Disk Creator selecting Factory Default disks first then selecting Application and Driver Disk.

One note, if it's an older model you will only be able to create the application and driver disk. It would have came factory with a base windows install disk. If you have lost this disk, you can reinstall using any standard OEM disk for the correct version of windows and using the windows license attached to the computer, but you will need the application and drivers disk to install your devices and programs.

If it's and older model and you can't find the disk, you can order a replacement set by contacting Emachines support, but there will be a cost invloved.

Use the HP or Compaq application recovery process to restore the audio driver to their original files and settings. You can find the software program in the start menu under either HP Tools , HP Help & tools , or Compaq , Compaq Tools .
To reinstall any driver that originally came with your computer, first make sure that the driver is available in Application Recovery as follows :
  1. Click on Start , All programs , and then Hewlett-Packard or Compaq . NOTE: If the Hewlett-Packard or Compaq folder does not appear, skip to the next step.
  2. Then, click on any of the folders below (just one of them will be available depending on the model of your computer):
    • HP Pavilion PC Tools ,
    • Compaq Presario PC Tools ,
    • PC Help and Tools , or
    • PC Recovery Tools .

  5. View the list of available drivers to make sure that the name of the driver that you want to restore is available. Close the window by clicking Cancel once you have verified the name. Figure 7: List of drivers c00786601.gif

MY laptop will not boot-up. I turn it on and all I get is a blank screen

try it in safe mode, (press F8 while its booting up) and select last known good configuration, if it doesnt start, turn it off then the F8 again but use safe mode; if it boots into windows you have a corupt driver, so run a system restore to the last saved point

If nothing works your boot.ini system file is missing and you will either have to use the recovery programme either F11 on boot up or Alt & F10 depending on model, but all your files will be lost and the system will be as new.

Missing recovery programme

Hi kattas, do you know if any of your friends that may also use windows media center edition in their PC?
If one does have the Windows Media Center CD you can use their CD to reinstall that over your PC's corrupt system. Located on your case is a Microsoft sticker & on that sticker is your CD-key for installing Media Center. The CD-key is specific for your Sony. Any Media Center CD will function & install over your corrupted current version. (Your not going to run format, your just going to boot to the CD & reinstall Windows). Please post your Sony's model number here so I can post Sony's web site link for you to download your driver software.
As a last option you can contact Sony & order new CD's for your model. You can click this link (to call Sony).

Best of luck to you!
