On start up it says Automatic Repair... then goes to a screen stating there was a problem with start up, then a black screen. I tried F8, F10 and F12.
Short Answer:
Use a Windows recovery disc or installation disc to repair the system or reinstall Windows.
Long Answer:
In my experience, this means that the operating system (OS) has been somehow corrupted. There is a possibility that your hard drive has failed, but this usually is not the case. I would recommend that you first try running hard drive testing software from a bootable media, such as the ones that can be found on the Ultimate boot CD at 'HDD/Diagnostics' in order to verify that your hard drive is still working properly. The previous step can be skipped, but if your hard drive is faulty, then you will encounter the same problem again later. At this point you have a few options: first you can try to repair the OS installation with the OS installation or recovery disc. Another option is to completely reinstall the OS. The previous option usually works for me, but this will usually result in the loss of all your files; to counter this I would recommend a using a Linux live installation disc (such as Ubuntu) or Parted Magic (can be found on the Ultimate Boot CD) to recover desired files to a flash drive (Parted Magic should only be used by advanced users).

this is as if you haven't got an installed operating system and requires it to be installed, but you have to enable your cdrom as the first boot device. Put your O.S disc in and reboot; then press enter to boot up from disc.

I download all the drivers from the HP web site. Took a brand new 160GB hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro. I then proceeded to install all the available drivers and softward from the HP web site. The Altiris Recovery Software allow for the creation of a recovery partition.
If you never had a recovery partion on your laptop, pushing buttons won't do anything for you. The F11 key is used for Altiris Recover Partion. I've done this to my TWO nc8000 and would consider buying a 3rd nc8000.

At boot up press F2 and enter BIOS. Here check if your HDD is recognized. If yes Ten your Windows is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. How to install and save your data follow the link below:
Crashed Windows : No Problem
If the HDD is not being recognized then run Auto Detect to recognize the HDD. If it works fine, if not then the HDD may need a change.
