I played around with W8 on an Asus notebook with a 1GHz CPU and found that each programme will open over the top of another. You could have many trying to run and causing the CPU to overload and freeze.
Waiting for the activity to slow from startup by observing the LED activity of the hard drive usually means all startup programmes have loaded and there is less draw on the CPU resources.Trying to access other software while startup is incomplete will compound sluggishness especially if the laptop is a netbook or has a low speed CPU.
If you experience the issue again please wait a few minutes before trying to access or cancel any programme to see if will work through any bottleneck created.

My laptops audio and cd player doesn't work and

The first thing to try is the following:
In XP:
  • From Start Menu
  • Open Control Panel
  • Choose Classic View
  • Double click on System
  • Click on Hardware tab
  • Click on Device Manager
  • Open the Sound, Video and Game Controllers by clicking on it
  • Right click on your sound card, choose Uninstall
  • Now go to the Actions menu and choose Scan for new hardware
  • Windows will scan through your computer, discover the audio adapter and reinstall its drivers
In Vista/7:
  • From Start menu
  • Choose Control Panel
  • Choose Classic View or Large Icons in 7
  • Double click on Device Manager
  • Open the Sound, Video and Game Controllers by clicking on it
  • Right click on your sound card, choose Uninstall
  • Now go to the Actions menu and choose Scan for new hardware
  • Windows will scan through your computer, discover the audio adapter and reinstall its drivers
If these don't resolve your problem, you need to download a new audio driver from your manufacturer's website.

Windows XP SP3 stops responding

Possible virus, corrupted files and registry. Try rebooting in safemode with network, if all works ok, then you have registry or virus problem; try scanning for virus and registry errors. If the problem insist in safemode, then you have corrupted system file and you will have to reinstall Windows.

Desktop icons doesnt show up. cant open 'my documents' 'control panel'

if you put your vista disc in and boot from that you should be able to go to a point when it was working or do a repair install.

If you need to do a repair install make sure you back all of your data up before you do it.

You should be able to use firefox or internet explorer to navigate the C drive to navigate and find all the documents you want to save etc and you should be able to copy it to a memory stick or external hard drive.

Try using your System Restore Point. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Sytem. On the Left Corner, you can see a System Resore, Click it. Now choose the option Restore my computer on an earlier time then Click Next. You can see a calendar, choose a date where you know when your computer works well. Click Next until it reboots your computer.
