The ink is out. Printer will not print with that message. If there is ink, you can usually hit "OK" and continue using ink, but if printer message appears "depleted", that means it is empty. Needs to be replaced. Try ebay for cheap replacement ink. If you considered refilling, then ebay ink is a better option. Here's a link to a few sets:

WONT PRINT IN BLACK

Hi Don,

Remove the Black cartridge and Clean the electrical contacts ( golden contacts ) with lint free cloth.

Turn off/on the printer and install the Cartridge. If this does not work, On the Front panel, Press Setup button >> Tools >> Clean Printhead/Cartridge - Press OK

This should fix the issue.
If the above steps did not fix, Replace the cartridge if its very old and has not been used for long time as it could be depleted. Try calling HP on 1-800-474-6836 If this is Genuine Cartridge recently purchased and it does not print in black.

Sean

The color does not print anymore, only the black thank you, jacques los angeles

Printers usually have two separate ink cartridges. Depending on the cartridge that is over exerted in print jobs is depleted faster than the remaining one. Open the ink compartment to ascertain the ink models to make possible acquisition for replacement from retail. Ink acquisitions may require verification for the appropriate models and brands. Extracting the depleted ink cartridge as reference comparison at retail enables appropriate ink selections compatible with the printer.

The printer tells me to replace an ink cartridge because the ink has been depleted. The cartridge is nearly new, though. Just yesterday it showed to be half full. I have cleaned the printheads and the...

There is a chip on your cartridge that communicates with the printer to estimate how much ink is left in the cartridge. When the chip thinks the cartridge is empty it will refuse to print any more pages no matter how much ink is left in the cartridge. These cartridges are only estimated to print "up to 840 4" x 6" photos, or 80 13" x 19" photos." If it showed half full yesterday and then you put through a large print job it is very likely the cartridge is empty. In any case once the chip thinks it's empty the cartridge needs to be replaced.

HP L7680 gives error ink in cartridges depleted can not printbut they are full

I had this problem recently after replacing the yellow ink cartridge. After much wrangling with HP, they sent me a new cartridge (since it's date code was not expired) and that seemed to fix that particular issue. You might also try getting a replacement cartridge from the vendor that sold you the one in question since it's likely to be faster and less painful than going to HP directly.
