Question about Jandy Laars LX Pool Heater / 400,000 BTU / Natural Gas

2 Answers

I am getting an error code that says "AGS" on the display of my Laars 400 LX. The fan starts up when I switch the heater on, but the furnace does not ignite. The gas valve is definitely on to supply gas. Any ideas?

The filter is absolutely clean. I had the gas valve shut off for about 2 years to ensure that the pool man did not make the mistake of leaving the heather on during the winter (which he did once and which cost me $1,000 in natural gas). The fan comes on and so does the blower which indicates that mechanically things are working. The LED display even shows "heat" for about 15 seconds before the unit shuts off, presumably because it is not getting ignition. Does that help you further in diagnosing the "AGS" message?

AGS is automatic gas shutdown,
can be caused by problems with pump pressure, or low gas supply pressure

Check the pump pressure if it is ok, if it is ok, check also the gas supply pressure

AGS is automatic gas shutdown, can be caused by problems with pump pressure, or low gas supply pressure and circulation problem or flame rectification. Is the filter clean and circulating at a good flow.

My Laars LX pool heater would shut off soon after it fires up

This error is Automatic Gas Shutdown. Here is what you can do:

  1. Check for fluctuating pump pressure (air in strainer, pressure guage bounce)
  2. Check all wiring connections
  3. Replace ignitor/flame sensor assembly
Depending on your expertise, it could also be the gas valve or ignition control (aka the IID).

Since the burners do fire briefly, I would suspect the flame sense rod first. Attached is a link to the owners manual in PDF.

Lo Nox heaters can be a little tough so follow the directions exactly.

What does service ags mean on a LAARS LX pool heater?

AGS stands for Automatic Gas Shutoff. This means the heater failed to sense a flame or flame rectification. When this occurs, the the gas valve will close as a safety precaution. The heater will have to be reset to get another call for heat.
