There is a new product out that will solve this problem once and for all. It is called the dishwasher filtration system. It is a small filter that goes under the sink and removes the hradness from your water before it enters the dishwasher. You will not have to worry about any clogged arms anymore and your dishes will look amazing. it is very affordable and works like a charm. get it at

Hello. Unfortunately untreated hard water will eventually clog all of the components of your water system, pipes, faucets, dishwasher, etc. etc. etc. if you need to unclog any component quickly and easily go to any hardware store and purchase a product called CRL which will dissolve calcium, rust and lime deposits very quickly. For a permanent fix, look at installing a water purification system.

Kenmore dishwasher top arm not spinning (tried everything I know)

Your problem may be scale. Over time dishwashers are particularly susceptible to accumulated scale as a consequence of their use of high temperatures to clean which causes some water to evaporation (steam) leaving behind the minerals in the water. The scale builds up over time diminishing the size of water pathways and outlets and reducing the flow of water and it can build up in the connections and reduce the ability of spinning elements to turn freely. Treatment with a descaler can clear the problem but it may take several treatments. If the scale is thick it will actually come off in flakes and repeated disassembly and cleanout of the rotating arms & spray heads will be required. Commercially available descalers work well, a common 'home recipe' is vinegar or vinegar & baking soda

Top wash arm does NOT spin, but is not blocked or hard to move by hand. Does this run off water pressure? Whatshould Itry next. I have already removed the filters and cleraned around the pump. The bottom...

Remove the dishwasher from the cabinet and look at the hose going up to the top. Make sure it isn't clogged and that there is nothing in the port where it comes out of the pump. The top arm is powered by water pressure from the pump.

If the lower and upper spray arms do not turn what could be the problem? I have a MDB4100AWB and I of course have hard water in our area and wondering what is causing the spray arms to turn.

could be the plastic shaft extension that screws onto the motor shaft to drive the pump. The threads on the plastic extension would sometimes get stripped out so that even though the motor is running, it isn't driving the pump mechanism. Assuming the dishwasher is filling with water and motor is running during the wash cycle. also check spray arm openings to make sure they aren't plugged up.

Dishes on top won't clean, seems to stem from arm below

Sounds like the water pump is not pumping the water. Or the most likely problem is that your arm is plugged with hard water or something. Take it out and clean it and check there first. Or something in the arm has broken and it no longer spins because it is not pressurizing correctly. Some acids will help disolve hard water and clean up the problem. I use a commercial grade acid for cleaning ice machines to eat away the hard water. Good luck and let me know if i can help you out anymore.

Top arm not spinning

only the top rack isnt getting clean?
there is a little plastic circle in the middle of the bottom of the upper spray arm. turn it counter clock wise to pull the upper spray arm from the upper rack. make sure that isnt clogged and the spray holes are not clogged. otherwise....

the piece that the bottem spray arm plugs into and runs along the back wall of the tank to the top is called a feed tube. pull the bottom spray arm out. now you can see the part of the feed tube that feeds the upper spray arm water. does it pop out freely and easily? if so then you need a new feed tube, if not then its most likely your not achieving the right water level or your impeller connected to your circulation pump(motor) is clogged not supplying enough water pressure to travel up the feed tube to spin the upper spray arm.

Top rack arm doesn't spin.

matt, did you get down to the chopper screen? If that screen is clogged the flow to the upper arm will be restricted. Check out the pic, Catriver
