I had he same problem. I took the float out and carefully bent it so it would shut the gas off earlier.

A lawn mower that gas comes out of the exhaust.

It sounds like the float in the carburetor is stuck in the open position. This will allow fuel to flow through the carb and out the muffler.

Troy bilt pony riding mower leaking gas from carburetor and now won't start

sounds as though it may be flooding. if that is the case the inlet needle valve will need removing and cleaning, and the carb cleaning out.

Eng stalls or runs rough under load

you may have a stuck float or a blocked jet. Remove line from the carburetor and check to see if you have gas flow from the line. When opening the petcock, you should see gas coming from the gas line, if not, check the petcock. If you are not that handy with machines, it's recommended you bring the lawn mower to a certified mechanic. But if you are, the next step would be to remove carburetor and disassemble the float housing. Check to make sure that there is nothing in the float housing (the bowl) that would keep it from working, careful you don't lose or bend the needle. If that is fine, you may want to use a can of compressed air to blow out the jets. Once you have cleared all the holes and cleaned out the bowl, re-install the carburetor and give it a shot. My recommendation to keep this from happening again, is to first put gas stabilizer in tank, and second, when putting mower away for the winter, close petcock and run mower until it dies from lack of gas. Good luck!

Lawnmower starting problems

Clean or replace air filter. Fill oil, 30w. Clean & gap plug or replace.
Remove carb bowl from bottom of carb & clean. If gas is 30 days or more old, use fresh gas with Stabile.

Lawnmower carburetor problem.

Remove carb float bowl. Check float operation. Float down gas flow, float up no gas flow. Clean float bowl. Observe bowl screw, see if there is a hole or holes thru the screw. Clean out with thin wire, bread wrapper works peeled back about an inch. Use wire to clean out center port of carb. Remove mounting pin of float, remove float and meter needle, clean out port up thru carb with wire. Reassemble try to start. Prime at least 3 times, ensure primer bulb is not cracked, replace if cracked. Replace air filter if dirty. Replace spark plug once a year. Fill oil. 30w. Mowers now have a low oil cutoff.

Lawn Mower putt putt when filter in place

Your air filter screw may be too long from over tightening air cleaner and crushing the cover. It warpes the carb allowing for gas to leak into carb. Grind or cut off screw alittle or put washer on and don't over tighten. thank you for using fixya.

Mower start fine. Runs for 20 min or so and then runs ruff and shuts down. Restarts fine and shuts down appr. 5 mins later. Has new spark plug, air filter, fuel filter and more than enough gas.

It's one of two things. My first thought is that you have a clogged gas cap. Try loosening it when the mower starts to run ruff. If it smooths out again and runs fine, then you know that the carburetor is not venting properly. Either buy a new gas cap or clear the breathing holes in the cap, if possible.

The only other thing it can be is that your Ignition Coil is going bad. A bad Coil, once it gets hot, will shut down. But it usually takes longer than 5 minutes for them to cool down well enough to start back up.

My Vote is the cap!

Good Luck!

My 3 month old yardmachine 21 inch push mower will not keep running. I can get it to start, it half idles and shuts off/ I have taken off the air filter and put gas directly into the prime and as long I...

The carburetor most likely needs a thorough cleaning. There is something in there stopping things up. Also check that your gas can is clean of debris. Also check the fuel tank, possibly have to clean it. I once found a dead wasp in a gas tank, I guess that it got there from a gas can.

Starts on first pull. Runs about 30 seconds and dies.

Found the air filters on both mowers were so saturated with oil there was not enough air getting to the carburetor. Cleaned the filters first with dishwasher detergent and hot water, dried them, then soaked them in aclcohol to remove more oil. Dried filters, installed on mowers, and both mowers now run fine.
