My central air runs for a few hours and then freezes up. I thaw it out and turn it back on and it runs for a few hours and then freezes up. first filter was dirty, changed that, but it still freezes up. Hosed out the outside unit.

Operate your air conditioner with the fan in the on position. But first turn the fan on, turn the temp up or shut the cooling off. Your coil is more than likely frozen over. At night when outside temperature drops the refrigerant pressure and temperature in the system also drops. This action can cause icing of the cooling coil, with the fan in automatic everything shuts down at the end of a cooling cycle. Thus no air movement to melt ice on previous cooling cycle.

SOUNDS LIKE THE FAN SPEED MAY BE TO LOW SO AS THE AIR GOES THROUGH THE COIL IT WILL START TO FREEZE HAVE SOMEONE CHECK THE FAN SPEED MAKE SURE IT IS ON HIGH ALSO MAKE SURE IF THAT IS THE ONLY FILTER ON THE SYSTEM
SOURCE: central air freezing up
Low freon causes this problem. It could be the compressor going bad, but 99% of the time it is that the freon is low, have it leak tested and also have freon added
SOURCE: Fujitsu ASU12C1 is freezing up
unit is freezing up because it either has too much freon or not enough. the pressure should be checked on both the low and high sides and corrected.
SOURCE: freezing up, home ac unit no air flow after running a while
A low freon level in the unit can cause them to freeze up. Are the fins behind the filter clean?
The heat tape will keep you from freezing pipes in the future.
Hope this helps..............
