I have a new Macbook Unibody, but it doesn't have a firewire port. When I connect my Sony HC30E Mini DV camcorder via USB cable, nothing happens. How else do I play my video recordings through my Macbook without a firewire connection?

Thanks for trying, but the problem is playing back digital video footage on the Mac. Until I can get the Mac to recognise the Sony after I connect via the USB port, I can't stream the video. The Sony uses mini DV tapes. Normally I would do this via Firewire, but my particular Mac doesn't have one. The memory card from the camera inserted in a card reader will only solve the still images transfer.

Thanks, but the problem is the Macbook not recognising the camera when connected via USB. A USB card reader is for use when accessing the memory card for still pictures. I want to transfer my video files.

Hi.Unless you have a MacBook Air then you have firewire. All MacBook Pro's have firewire. However, it is now Firewire 800 which uses a different plug to Firewire 400 which is what the cable from your camera will be. You may have to do a bit of searching, but I found thisFirewire 800 9-pin to 4-pin Leads
with just a couple of clicks.

Buy a USB card reader, this will show your card (which you used in the camera) as a normal disk in finder

This type of camera usually downloads video over a Firewire (DV, IEEE1394) connection. Some mini-DV cameras have a USB connection but it is used only for stills.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card. As you have a MAC, you may already have a port.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My Samsung mini-DV camera came with the correct lead. I did not need a driver, just some sort of video editing software that can accept input. Even Windows Movie Maker that ships with Windows will work.

I have a macbook that does not have a firewire port to connect the camera to import video. Is there an adapter for usb?

Unfortunately, even if there were a USB adapter, the USB port would not be able to keep-up with the data transfer speeds of the DV-Out over firewire from the camcorder.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that I could have provided better news.
Thanks for using FixYa and Happy New Year.

How do i up load into a mac computer

There is a tutorial, manual and other downloads for your camera on this page.

This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection for stills (if they have one) and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will probably need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other.

I need a USB cable 4-pin Mini I-Link

Check your computer user’s manual, if your computer doesn’t have a Firewire port, you need to buy an IEEE1394 card to install in your computer and a firewire cable to connect your Mini DV. Check with your local computer store

Why do you need that **** software from Sony?If you have a firewire port on your computer and a firewire cable you can transfer your footage with Windows Movie Maker. In Movie Maker you can choose the DV-AVI option to preserve the full quality of your footage.Later you can use the DV-AVI in Virtual Dub/After Effects/Premiere for editing or encoding.

Why i can't conect dv to pc {sony DCR_HC30E} Now tell me

Hi, Check if it has the firewire port. If so, you can get a 4 pin firewire cable and connect to the PC.
Switch on the Cam.
Open Windows Movie Maker and import video from device.

4 pin firewire would look like this:

Hmm. I'm not exactly sure on your model, but you would either use a firewire port or USB port to make the capture. I'm more than sure since it is a mini dv camera that you would have a fire port/Ieee1394 Connect.
