Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I just picked up a very clean used 20 year old GE fridge. It works well but makes a loud clattering noise for about 20 seconds evry hour or so. I've done a major cleaning underneath of coils and also in back - is this a selenoid or switch going bad? Thanks

Hi,

Nope its not the selenoid switch. It probably is the fan. The fan was in the lower part of the freezer and circulated cold air throughout the machine. I took the shroud apart and removed the motor. It's one of those open type, fractional horsepower - called a shaded pole motor. The bearings were dry. oillite bearings in a felt like holder. Also one of the screws were loose making the fan blade strike every once in a while the inside of the ducting. I re-assembled everything after lubing with a very light machine oil - WD-40 will not work here and there was no noise.

GE Harmony Dryer makes Loud Vibrating noise

If you can open the walls of the dryer up check all screws and bolts that hold things together. Some times they will vibrate loose causing parts to make a vibrating sound against the frame itself.. Eventually the loose screws will just keep getting looser. Even the screws on the walls of the unit should be tightened That could cause a lot of noise.

When washer is started make loud grinding noise

Very likely the bearings in the motor have begun to fail. You can replace the motor, but for a 15 year old DW, sometimes it makes better sense to just buy a new one. Depends on the features the old DW has, vs new, vs motor replacement cost.

Loud humming noise as fridge is running

if you have ice buildup then the fridge may be low on freon.
or there is dust clogging around the pump or fan is not running.
remove the bottom or back and look around the compressor.
see that the fan is running.

GE Profile Refrigerator (Model #20) w/freezer on the bottom

If the problem disappears (for a while) when the freezer reaches 32F, then I know what the problem is.

The GE Profile refrigerators (and likely other models as well) often don't defrost properly, especially in humid climates. So they can develop ice buildup internally, especially if the air vents at the back of the freezer are blocked by frozen food. Once that happens, that ice can interfere with the cold air circulation booster fan that runs when the freezer temperature is too warm. Then you get a LOUD buzzing noise from the fan blades, as they bang into the ice.

The immediate "solution" is to be sure nothing blocks the air vents, and then to melt the ice that interferes with the fan. You can turn the fridge off for a while (with the food removed so it doesn't spoil), and/or get a hair dryer and heat the inside back of the freezer, until the ice melts and falls away from the fan. (Just be careful not to block the nozzle of the hair dryer, or it may burn out from overheating!)

But the ultimate solution is to buy another refrigerator, one that is NOT a GE! And that makes me sad, because GE used to make GREAT refrigerators. My last GE refrigerator is nearly 20 years old, and still works well, and it does so QUIETLY.

Sounds like the freezer fan is rubbing some wires or possible some foam insulation around the fan. I would look into the freezer compartment fan and go from there. The fan Will Shut off when you open the doors. Let me know how you make out and if you need anymore help.

Thanks,
Bill
