I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with the original 18-55mm lense and a Quantarey 70-300mm lense. Have had all pieces for 3 years now and everything worked great until last night. Camera focuses and works fine with the small lense but with the zoom lense it will not focus and I get an Error 001 message????

This means that the communication with the Quantarey lens is not the right one.

You can try in cleaning the lens contacts and the camera contacts with a pencil eraser or a white erase (flip down the camera so no particles get inside the mirror box).

If still you are having problems, then that means the Quantarey lens is defective, and either needs to be service to be repaired, or you will need to get another zoom lens.

I was wondering if lenses from a Canon 35mm camera will work with this camera?

When choosing a lens for your Digital Rebel XT, look for EF or EF-S on the lens. Film lenses with the EF designation will work on your digital camera, but AF or older lenses will not fit. Trying to force them on may damage your camera.
When using a film lens on a digital camera, there will be a 1.6x conversion factor. This means that a 50mm lens will be closer to a 70mm lens in reality.

There is a minimal focusing distance for all lenses. If you move closer to the subject than that distance then the camera won't focus on it. Check you lens manual for minimal focusing distance. It is 11 inches for Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM, for example.

Dust is something that will need to be addressed. Get a Visual Dust brush and learn how to use it. You can help reduce dust by 1) changing lenses with the camera body facing down and 2) turning off your camera when changing lenses.
