If this has recently started, vacuum the vents or blow air through the vents. You can also buy cooler pads that the laptop sits on and plugs to the usb to run 1, 2 or 3 fans to cool the outside of the base.( on e-bay £10-$17 or so)

Sony vaio pcg-71318L overheating

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

Vaio logo comes up, then a screen saying that it didnt shut down correctly and I should choose last good configuration, normal start up, safe mode, etc., windows logo comes up, then a blue screen flas

it sounds like the processor is overheating and the system is shutting down to prevent thermal damage. If this is the case you need to make sure all vents are free of dust. you will probably need to open the case and clean the heatsink and fan assembly and probably a good idea to apply some thermal paste to the processor also. try to use the pc on a hard flat surface as it allows the air to be drawn into the vents to cool the system.

My sony laptop suddenly shut down itself when am playing a game. it shuts with a certain sound

Laptops are very often overheating, so it wouldn't be a surprise if you playing the game makes it even hotter and it just shuts down to protect itself from damage.
You can try using a cooling pad/fan or just make sure the laptop fans can circulate air freely.

My sony vaio VGN-AW41ZF keeps turning off by itself. It doesnt shut down, just cuts off as if there is no power but the battery is fully charged and plugged in. Could this be an overheating problem?

I have a Sony VAIO GRS170/GRS175 in use almost every day since 2003. It used to turn off regularly during hot summer days even with its battery fully charged and plugged in. The problem was eliminated by using a small fan to blow air at its side where the air intake was located. Later, the fan was replaced with a notebook cooling pad which was more convenient. You could first try using a fan to see if it makes any difference. If you don't get anymore shut downs, then the problem is definitely due to overheating. You could then replace the fan with a notebook cooling pad.

My sony viao vgn-cs215j suddenly turn off by itself and it takes 20 minutes before i can re-start and use it again and after 15-20 minutes would shut off by itself again without any warning. what could be...

Sorry i nay be a month late on this thread... but better late than never. My Girlfriends sony vaio VGN-CS215J seems to be doing the exact same thing. After buying one of those computer fans that you rest the computer oneverything seems to be running normal. i would also recommend cleaning your fans inside the computer because dirt dust and grime can hold the fans back from cooling down the laptop efficiently and will cause the safety overheat shutdown to activate and shutdown your computer... that way it does catch on fire or fry any of your hardware inside of your computer.

If that does not work... your fans maybe malfunctioning or not functioning at all. this model of vaio has a grinding fan issue that can be very damaging to your cpu if not fixed.

hope this helps,

My Toshiba m205 4806 shuts down spontaneously. The lap top feels warm but the fan is running. any suggestions?

The cpu get overheated and will shtdown to protect it. The fan continues to run until a CPU safe temperature is reached / sustained.

1. Use laptop on flat surface, not on pillow, carpet, bed, etc. that will restrict air flow. Using a can of compressed air, clear the air vents.

2. If the symptom continues, then the heat conductive paste between the cpu chip and the heatsink is no longer effective (hardened, too thin, etc.). Remove the heatsink and add thermal paste
($6 Radio Shack).

My Sony Vaio seems to kick the cooling fan on quite a bit more than normal and even seems a bit noisy for a computer fan....is this the norm???

Fan on this model may start and stop spontaneously. This is normal. Although if VAIO is overheating this would be good idea to contact Vaio tech support.
