MTD uses many, many, many different belts. You will need the model and serial number located under the seat. Usually starts with 13A. Any MTD dealer can find the proper belt for you with those numbers. I definitely recommend the use of proper MTD belts. Automotive belts have a different V shape and will fail prematurely.

SOURCE: craftsman 42 inch deck won't run

Check proper belt routing. These models are a little tricky. Also check tensioner spring.

SOURCE: The newly purchased deck belt turning the blades is extremely loose

If idler is in tact and spring attached, it is likely that the belt isn't routed properly. If you try to route the rear-most portion of the belt around the idler, it will be loose. You must route the front-most portion of the belt around the center blade pully and then around the idler. Just Google "MTD 46 inch deck diagram" and you will go to a Parts Tree site with the proper diagram showing routing.

SOURCE: I have a Yard Machine

There is generally a spring loaded tensioner pulley to take up slack as the belt ages and stretches. If this is not adequate, perhaps the wrong belt is on there.

are you putting the belt adjuster on correctly. It took a while to sort out but the belt was always too big until I sorted out how to fit the tensioner.
