H4 zoom battery operation

My H4 zoom will not operate on batteries. It operates fine on AC adapter.

The H4 will not power up in battery operation. It appears dead. I have replaced batteries and problem still exists.

Try resoldering the circuit board where the power socket is ... as there is a switch on the socket that disconnects the batterys

I have the opposite problem -- my H4 works perfectly on battery power, but the power adapter does not work. I have a friend with an H4n whose specs indicate the same power requirements (12v 1amp -ve polarity) -- we tried his power adapter with my H4 -- it still does not work on AC power. My friend checked the connections and they all seem fine otherwise. His suggestion was to solder a jumper wire from the AC connector to the battery side and use a 3v adapter instead, but not really interested in doing so. It would allow me to run the unit on AC, but my real interest in running it on AC is to use phantom-powered mics for extended periods of time. Any ideas?

I think it must be a problem with the H4,,, mine won't seem to run off either adapter or batteries, however when I put rechargeables in at 2.6v combined it will run and then power down stating that it the battery is down!?!. I have tried to hardwire and run off 3v like in the above suggestion, but doesn't seem to run then either. My guess it is a known voltage sensing issue with the unit.

What would cause my Zoom HN4 not to power up from batteries or mains adapter?

You will probably find the bottom board (the one where the inputs go) unplugged from the Main board.
Clean connectors with alcohol, plug back in, and in my case I put in a toothpick to maintain pressure to the chassis. BINGO ! You might check the other boards too and clean battery connectors. Be Happy and Well....

How to perform a factory reset on zoom H4

Hello ! Actually what you do is download the latest firmware from the ZOOM page. Find HANDY H4 (you can Google that) and go to the Download tab. Follow all instructions. Be sure to have new batteries or be plugged in to AC while you reset. I've done it on my H4(I have 2) and H4n and it worked fine. Be patient, it takes a while once you start. Good luck !!

It blinks with "be" and turns off

It may be "but" that you're seeing, which indicates the batteries are low. Use the AC adapter made just for this model only, and the guitar needs to be plugged in to turn the unit on. A full manual for this Zoom model can be found here:

Rechargeable batteries CANNOT be used in this, ONLY alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries are ACTUALLY lower volltage (about 1.25 instead of 1.5) that is very near the cutoff point for operation so even fully charged rechargeables last only minutes. Sorry you used "universal" adapter because either you chose wrong polarity or too high a voltage and fried the internal voltage regulator. It is repairable by repair facility.

Usually the problem will be with the battery contacts. Often corrosion due to leaving batteries in too long or the spring contacts, don't. Another harder thing is the adapter connector often has a spring blade that contacts the center pin when adapter is unplugged to switch to battery. These get bent and are a chronic problem for devices that use either adapter or battery.

My Zoom H4 will no longer run with batteries. If I use AC adaptor it works fine but I get nothing on battery power

Probably the connector where you plug the AC adapter into has a switch contact that disconnects the battery when external adapter is used and it has gotten bent so when the adapter is not plugged in, it no longer makes contact to the battery power. This is pretty common for devices that use both battery and adapters.

Zoom H4 does not power up on battery power.

Probably two years too late, but I recently got a used H4 and it was having this same issue. Upon reading the documentation, it seemed as though it required a specific type of AA batteries. If you update the firmware (mine was 1.3) to the latest version (currently 2.4), you can toggle the battery type under the menu (most likely alkaline is what you want). It also added lots of other great features!
