Router issues

I recently bought a Netgear wnr2000 wireless n router after my linksysg stopped working (I'd only had it a 1 1/2 years). Unfortunately, Istill seem to be having problems. When I tried to install using thedisk provided, it said it was not a recognized operating system(windows 64 bit), so I had to set it up manually. I did this usingthe network feature with Vista. It is connected correctly and all thelights on the router are on. The network map shows that my desktop andlaptop are present (it does say that desktop is connected throughswitch while laptop through router, which I found strange). My surfingexperience on the desktop which is wired directly to the router usuallyworks (sometimes fails); however, when my laptop tries to connect, mydesktop gets knocked off of internet. My laptop which is connectedwirelessly will show that I have a connection and will go to myhomepage. If I try to go anywhere else on the laptop, I get the ''pagecannot be found'' message. I do repeatedly seem to get the message thatthere might be something wrong with the DNS server (whatever thatmeans). I have tried several troubleshooting things including thesuggestion that I disable my DHCP broadcast. (If I need to change thisback I will as I only did this on the desktop). The internet connectsfine when directly connected to my desktop through just the modem w/othe router, so I don't think that is the problem. I do have mycomputer going through a DSL filter, but the telephone guy said thatshouldn't be a problem. I have tried removing it, but have foundlittle improvement. I am thinking about returning the router andtrying something else if there is not a fix out there. Thank you foryour help. I tried to supply as much info as possible.

I also want to mention that problems started shortly after Directv guyput in new HD receiver and dish. Not sure that would make anydifference unless he tampered with phone line.

Make sure there is a filter on the phone line that the DirecTV receiver plugs into as well as the one on your DSL modem line.

Also, I'd try to set up the router manually, bypassing the Vista setup. Follow the instructions here: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNR2000_SM_07May08.pdf and see if that helps.

I almost always throw out the setup disk and go with the web-based config, as I have more confidence in myself than an automated tool connecting to another automated tool. :-)
