I had the same problem. Then I took off the brushbar (it's underneath at the front). It just pops off. Then it worked fine. I guess you only need it for long carpets.

VAX W85-PL-T not picking up water.
The first time I used it, it was fine. Then i cleaned it and the next time it just wasn't picking up water. Eventually traced the problem: - it is ESSENTIAL that the little black belt guard, held onto the roller brushes by 2 screws is seated properly. If it is not then the front of the machine is effectively raised off the floor by 1/8 inch and this prevents suction of the carpet. Check that the front of the machine is resting on the carpet and if there is a gap then this might be your problem. Hope it helps someone.

SOURCE: vax rapide not realising water

I have just managed to fix the problem i had with my vax rapide not releasing water. I also tried tilting it and that did not work. I unscrewed the brush from the base of the carpet washer and there is a black plastic strip with holes in where the water comes out of and onto the carpet. I used a needle to unblock these tiny holes which had become blocked after the last use. I now have it working again.
