Hi,
Depending on how your keyboard is configured, that key is set to do one of two things:
Puts your computer to sleep. (A low power state where almost everything is shut off, including the monitor). You can resume from sleep by hitting any key on the keyboard, hitting the power button on your computer, or clicking the mouse.
Puts your computer into hibernation. (An even lower power state where everything is actually shut off, but a copy of everything open is saved to the hard drive to be opened during start up. It basically allows you to turn off the computer, but be able to turn it back on with program exactly how you left it). You can resume from hibernation only by hitting the power button on your computer.
Hope this helps. If it does, please accept and rate the solution! You can leave a testimonial or contact me with any more questions you may have. Thanks for using FixYa!
Keyboards are made with mechanical switches.
If most of your keys work, then I would assume that the electronics are still OK and that the issue is with 'sugar coated contacts' caused by dried/semi-dried sweet pop liquid.
The best way would be to carefully open the keyboard to get to those sugar coated contacts and clean them with some cleaning white spirit/denatured/medical alcohol.
You could alternatively lift the cover for the specific key (which normally clicks on the switch) and pour some cleaning alcohol down the center of the switch to dislodge the sugar.
IN ALL CASE, MAKE SURE THAT THE POWER IS OFF AND YOU ARE IN WELL VENTALITED AREA AWAY FROM ANY FIRE SOURCE OR SPARKS!
LET THE ALCOHOL EVAPORATE COMPLETELY BEFORE RECONNECTING!
Make sure the laptop's external VGA port is turned on. There will be a function key somewhere on the keyboard (location varies by manufacturer and model) that controls the connector. If the connector has gotten turned off the external monitor will go to sleep because it's not getting any input.
