You don`t say what year and model this is. if you have a system charging at 16 volts, then you know its over charging. are you checking this with a volt meter independent of the car as the meter in the dash maybe wrong. if its over charging with an independent gage it could be the computer as it controls the ground circuit to cause the system to charge and discharge to keep the charging rate within specs. the flickering is a result of the over charging.

SOURCE: flickering lights

In some 1999/2000 Cougars the wire between the battery and the voltage regulator(altenator) had a resistance reading that is too high. Ford has issued an TSB 00-25-6 that has instructions on how to replace this wire. The part # for the replacement wire is
1S8Z-14A411-AA. I'm in Michigan and a local dealer found one for me in South Bend,IN

I have 91 Previa and about a week ago I was at a stoplight and the battery light flickered on and then my van lost power and died. I bought a new battery and all seemed well until 2 days later when

Hi

Yes it sounds like the alternator voltage regulator is wearing down and needs to be changed or replaced.

If you can get your hands on a 12 volt multimeter, turn the setting to 20 dc and place the negative wire on the negative battery post and the positive wire on the positive battery post.

The battery with motor off should be 12.6 volts and higher, start the the car the read out should be 14.,2 or higher.

You can turn the lights and heater on to see if the alternator can cope with the load.

if read out is less then you need to change or replace it.

Cheers

My headlights and some dash board lights are flickering. Its getting worse.

AS YOU STATE THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE ON THE ALTERNATOR AND MOST PROBABLY THE REGULATOR IS THE FAULT OR THE BRUSHES. THEREFOR YOU NEED THE HELP OF AN ELECTRICIAN TO TEST YOUR ALTERNATOR FOR CHARGING AND ALSO THE BATTERY CHARGING CAPACITY AND POWER LEFT THEREIN.

My battery light and brake light goes on , some time goes off and on / I have a new battery and I change the altalnator

Check the battery terminals (where they are connected to the engine.) Those clamps can be loose or corroded. It happened to me and if i hit a bump or the road was bumpy, the battery cables would slide loose and the power would flicker or die completely
Open the hood when the car is off and try to wiggle the positive nad negative connections on your battery. They shouldn't move at all. If they're loose, tighten them up carefully. If they're covered in battery acid or corroded, then you may need new terminals for your new battery to connect well to your engine. Good luck, i hope this helps.

Lights flicker, (outside and inside lights). have already checked the battery and alt. , every good. battery light comes on( it flickers) and we lose power. have changed 3 coil packs ( the garage put it in...

You need to check the plug that goes into the alternator to see if it's tight fitting next the brushes inside the alternator have a wear indicator that is a hole in the center it is also used to set them in place with a pin that could be the flickering cause the brushes are solid till they get to the opening so when the alternator is running there's always a break in contact because of the hole so it makes and breaks contact causing the flickering and the charging level is ok but when a lot of accessories are on it can't keep up the charging voltages so the battery gradually goes dead losing power also another spot to look is the power distribution box cable it co u ld be loose and dirty and corroded

The redbattery light just came on. When I accelerate, the red light flashes. Can you help? Also, the red brake light comes on and off. Thank you.

The battery light may have come on because your alternator drive belt is loose or worn. The flickering could be explained by the acceleration. As you give it more revs the light goes off. On the other hand the alternator may need to be overhauled. I dont know what the brake light flashing is about.

Replaced alternator and battery 2x and only works for short time.

This could be caused by a faulty voltage regulator, but since it has happened on more that one alternator, that can't be the problem, right? The next thing that I would look at would be a defective or loose belt. Also check the tensioner to make sure it is working properly and is keeping tension on the belt. If the belt is slipping or is worn out, it will cause voltage fluctuations. You may want to look at changing or at least inspecting the belt. Hope this helps and best wishes.

98 Maxima - Battery and Brake Lights flickering

First off - 125K mi is nothing on that car (as long as you maintain it). The alternator is actually also the voltage regulator and this aspect of the alternator frequently fails before the actual alternator itself does and causes irregular voltage - so it makes sense you drove without the battery connected but you probably were having irregular power instead of a nice steady 14V (the other thing to know is that even if they do show 14V all the time the amperage may differ, both problems = change the alternator).

My battery light flickers when I am at a stop sign--it goes off when i accelerate. i bought a battery and the alternator tests ok.

either the belt is slipping or the alternator is losing juice at a lower rpm....i take it it was checked in park,or taken out and tested by a machine which spins fast?
