Flame rollout sensors, overheat thermistor, air proving switch, bad earthing, blocked flue. Any of these things can cause your problem. If its a permanent pilot, is it clean burning?? If electronic ignition, is the flame rod clean i.e. no carbon or rust etc.. Safest bet is a qualified gasfitter take a look at it.

Tip

Furnace main burner lights then goes right off.

If your central heaters main burner comes on for a few seconds and goes right off this could help you. First you will need some steel wool (not a SOS pad) and a 1/4 nut driver. Turn the Heater OFF. Locate the sensor near the burner, it will have only one wire to it, also often yellow or white. The sensor is usually L shaped. Take the 1/4 screw out and remove the sensor and gently clean with the steal wool. This solves this problem 97% of the time.

Turn main furnace switch on, combustion air fan comes on and main circulation fan comes on. About 40 seconds later the igniter lites, two burners closest to the igniter fire up and immediatly snuff out....

Hello, if all the burners are not firing up then they must be cleaned out, usually dirt gets in the crossover parts of the burner and the gas cant flow to all the burners and therefore the flame sensor will turn off the furnace for safety. Clean the burners out this should fix the problem.

My vulcan ducted heating unit blows cold air for approx 1 minute when turned on then stops and try's again after approx 1 minute,it does this several times until ignited. It is obviously an ignition...

Two things have to occur here:

1) The ignitor has to light off the gas. A bad ignitor, or dusty burners can prevent ignition.

2) The thermocouple has to be in the flow of burning gas to prevent a safety shut-down, and has to be working.

And the obvious: you need pressure in the gas line, and the gas valve needs to be open.

Hope this helps you locate the problem!

gas valve could be clogged it has a screen in the side of the inlet, check this first if not it could be the gas valve itself,, make sure the gas valve is turned on also, sometimes people turn them off and for get the handle should be in line with the pipe not across the pipe
