Planetary head of mixer is loose - 1/8" space separated from top case, but still attached. Can it be hammered back? Does it have to be disassembled or replaced?

I have the same problem. It appears to be due to a design flaw-the planetary assembly is press fitted to the drive shaft, and will come loose, to the point where the entire assembly will drop out of the machine. This could be a serious safety issue if the beater and bowl is not in place when the machine is powered on.

Although I have been able to put the planetary assembly back into place using a good amount of effort, the assembly has fallen off repeatedly. Googling the issue has shown that this is a common issue that is particular to the Pro 600 series of mixers.

Contacting KitchenAid through their website as well as by phone has proven unsuccessful so far. I was offered a 50% discount on a new machine (mine is out of warranty). However, no one at KitchenAid to date has been able to verify that there have been any design changes have been made to address the issue. I am still awaiting a call from the factory to determine if there have been any changes to the design, or if there is a way to repair the machine that is approved by KitchenAid.

I was able to find one person who reported success by using a pin to secure the assembly-see this link http://www.fixya.com/support/t6519821-planetary_assembly_fell_off

While this may address your issue, be advised that this may void the warranty on your mixer.

Good luck!

Won't turn on

You may have control circuit trouble, connection issues with the wiring, control board trouble, all rather rare; more common is side effect from attempt to keep a clean kitchen...
...Beneath large (plastic) screw heads each side of mixer are a spring, copper or brass cup, another longer spring and a carbon brush... which may NOT slide out freely- if not, thats doubtless the problem... the carbon has a corner ground off it to insure proper alignment and preserve the commutator (motor life) so it only fits in one way... wrong way it will jam up on the keying device inside the brass or copper brush holder into which it slides. (the key can be seen all the way inside the holder with aid of a flashlight)
IF THIS BRUSH HOLDER SLIDES OUT WITH THE CARBON YOU HAVE A MAJOR MAJOR JOB TO REINSTALL IT CORRECTLY!!! If the carbon becomes an issue you are best advised to use a factory recommended facility for the repair and avoid damage to the commutator or other issues. It may require total disassembly and removal of entire motor, which usually involves disassembly of the transmission in order to remove the armature. In other words, absolute TOTAL disassembly in the worst-case scenario.
Good luck- most frequently its a simple matter, but beware of the heads-up issue. Check the brushes first but put em back carefully.

My KitchenAid KSM90 will not turn off. All the speed settings seem to work, it just won't shut off. I have it open, but don't understand how the switch operates such that it turns the mixer off. The...

I determined that the switch that controls whether the mixer is on or off is controlled by a copper bar with a contact. The contact got fused to the copper bar, possibly due to a short. Since the contact got fused to the copper bar, the circuit was always connected, so the mixer was always on. The solution was to 1) unplug the mixer, and 2) take a screw driver and gently pry the contact away from the copper bar. When the mixer is in the off position, the copper bar and contact are no longer in contact. When the mixer is on, the copper bar and contact make contact. My mixer now works just fine. Yea!

Bowl cannot be removed from stand - stuck

Mine is stuck too and it's so annoying. I used terry cloth and hammer the bowl to knock the bowl down (1-2 times and not too hard). I think the bowl is up a bit and over locked when doing bread dough.
