As you haven't mentioned the model name and the power of the generator . First of all your generator's engine is not running properly by properly I mean it's not running on the required RPM normally in gasoline engines the rpm is set on 3600 first of all you have to assure that engine is running smooth as you have mentioned that it runs rough that means you check your engine first like change the engine oil, check the air filter and the carburettor clean them if required, and than the spark plug, clean it and adjust the gap or replace it than check the fuel it should not be old enough as it looses it's octane value or there should not be any other content in the fuel fallen accidentally, check the fuel filter as well it should not be clogged after doing all this start the engine it should run absolute smooth. Now go on the generator side. You said it produces power in between, for a little time or so that means there is a disconnection somewhere this means due to the vibrations in the unit it gets connected and disconnected. Check all the wiring fuses coming out from the alternator up to the power out plug

Miller trailblazer 302 it has 110 volts but no 220 volts

Both sets of the 120? If both of those are there (all 4 outlets), then the machine is producing 220v. So get a flashlight and look into the holes on the 220 receptacle, or check the wires on the backside of the receptacle. All that 220 is, is two 120 volts out of phase.

My portable generator runs great but only produces 7 volts and 20 volts on each 110 volt receptacle and 20 volts on the 220 volt receptacle. any ideas on troubleshooting steps to find the problem part?

Assuming the speed is correct check the voltage on the rotor brushes during running (Caution) It should be DC. If you have low or no DC voltage then the capacitor in the end of the generator housing is bad, or the AVR. If you do have voltage then make sure the slip rings are clean and shiny, from there you may have a rotor or stator issue that needs carefull resisitance check

Gnerator not producing ac power

I recently had a similar problem during "Sandy". I forgot to turn off the hot tub before starting the generator and the house lightswhere barely lit, dim, and flickering under the load. I quickly shut itoff andthe hot tub, but not before frying half of my generator. It will only produce 110now, not the 220 usual adn I need to get it fixed. I imaging you may be experienceing the same thing if you can't reset it. My generator has two reset buttons right next to the outlets on the unit itself.

You may be asking too much of the unit; the 5800 watts a which it is spec'd, may be a 'peak' power rating which may be 15-20% higher than its continuous rating. 30 Amps at 220 volts implies 6600 watts which is higher than even the peak power rating. I would expect the unit to produce ~4800 watts continuous or around 22 Amps.
Decided to check my statements and found this, which I quote:
Generator Volts AC (60Hz) 120/240 Max. Output Current 5800W-48.3A/24.2A Rated Output Current 4800W-40A/20A Volts DC (AMPS) 12 (8.3)

Check all wiring and fuses associated with you voltage regulator if they check ok, find a way to adjust your voltage regulator replace it. Make sure the unit is running at 3600 rpm as well and making 60 hz.

"I was welding with a

Your generator is a welder?? Yikes, the 220 volts coming out of the genny is not the same as the 220 volts running a welder, it is, but it isn't, the 220 volts used to run the welder are transformed into DC, in the 50 -150 amp range, the 220 volts coming out of your genny is 220 volts, AC, at 30-40-50 amps. Now exactly how were you welding with 220 volts AC? Remove anything plugged into the genny, check the oil, check the gas, make sure it is fresh, check the breakers, check the fuses, get it running, now don't try to weld with it again. Unless you have a big welder to plug into it and I wouldn't even do that because of the generator spikes. I might be wrong, but I have never seen a genny with a welder on it for home use.

Runs great but will not produce electricity

To flash the excitor circuit on a coleman ( the generator is built by generac) you need a 12 volt battery. You quickly apply 12 volts via your 120vac recepticals. NO MORE THAN ONE OR TWO SECONDS! Then check you ac voltage. Most of the time the brushes are burnt up when voltage is low. Check the brushes first. You can access them by taking the end cap off of the generator via two to four screws. The brush holder is easy to spot, two wires leading to the front of the amature. Hope this solves your problem.
