How do i charge a AMANA Ptac with R22 freon

I have an AMANA PTAC and the thing runs, but does not get as cold as it did before. I beleive that it may be low on freon. I want to charge it, But how do i know which is the low side, and which is the high side? also, how much freon would i put in this unit? will the unit stop taking in the freon when the comressor is full or do i have to do it manually. Thanks!

Also, if you get caught working on ANY freon based refrigeration without a license, you could face a large fine. Freon isn't $3 per pound anymore, it's quite expensive and you don't want any of it wasted. Have a licensed technician do the work. He will know exactly how much refrigerant your system needs, and he can remove what's there and add to it.

I would not recommend charging without finding and fixing a leak. The charge should never leak off therefore if it is a low charge it needs repaired. Have you tried cleaning the condenser (outside coil) . Spray a good cleaner on it and rinse with a hose. Don't spray electrical parts or have it plugged in. You probably would be best to let an experienced person do the refrigerant work for you. There are a lot of special expensive tools you would need and some experience. Try cleaning first if you haven't already. Good Luck!

Amana Ptac 2012 R410A runs compressor 5-10 min then will not run only fan. Freon level is good. Reset and compressor will run again then only fan again..cleaned

You said in another post that the error was c7. That means evaporator freeze. Too cold. That could be lack of air flow, bad sensor, ice on the coils.

If you unplug an Amana PTAC unit and it freezes what could happen?

If you are not going to run the unit put a large bag over the out door section. The unit will be just fine.

Have Ptac units that work fine one minute and 2 hours later just blow warm air.. some that also freeze up the front coils

I think your PTAC is under charge, if the air filter is clean and the evaporator is also clean together with the blower. Check the freon charge and refill if suction pressure is below 50psi and discharge is below 190 psi.
