I'm trying to hook my lap-top to run through my sony trinitron. I have my s-video cable connected to both and the headphone jack cable running into the audio-in. Looking at a blank screen reading 'video 1', no sound. What am I missing?

Re: How to run laptop through tv
In order to send the picture from any computer to a TV screen, you must have a VGA input on the TV. You can't output your computer signal using s-video, HDMI, or component cables because they aren't designed for computer use. If you have a VGA connection on your TV, then you can use a standard VGA cable. If your TV doesn't have one, unfortunately you're out of luck.

Most Laptops have a VGA output port. You would just hook this to the VGA input of the TV for video (picture). You would then need to hook an audio cable from the laptops headphone jack to the TV's VGA's Audio Input jack. Newer laptops have a HDMI output so that is easier and can hook directly to the TV's HDMI input for both video and audio.
Connecting your laptop to your TV will require a HDMI cable. Attach the cable to the HDMI ports on the latop and TV, then change the source input from your TV to HDMI and your TV will now display your laptop.
If your Tv does not have the HDMI port you can use the RCA cables. If your Tv does not have the RCA video/audio ports you will need an adapter from Radio Shack for hooking up a video camera to a cable Tv. This adapter will allow you to hook the Roku to the adapter with the RCA cables, then the adapter hooks to the Tv with a cable just like a cable box. This adapter is also a pass through for other devices like a cable box and or another DVD player. Hope this helps FixYa up.
Check your ports on the lap top see if you have s video or hdmi or dvi or VGA the best is hdmi if you have that get a cable for either one of you connections also match connections from the lap top to what you have for your TV more than likely if they are both fairly new you should have hdmi connections for both get a cable that is long enough. I get my cables at amazon.com their prices are the bomb.
Connect them together both ends to lap top and to tv then make sure that you have a line in jack stereo jack with RCA ends hook that to the back of your tv and your lap top in stereo jack even better to your surround sound system. Set your TV to AVI 1 or 2 or DVI or whichever is your connection start a movie on the lap top and turn your sound on and see if you have a picture on your screen you should have the same thing as what is showing on your monitor on your lap top. Adjust settings and have fun!
Your Sony has several varieties of possible connections. They include,
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)
Make sure that the appropriate choice with in the menu "SETUP" option matches the connection at the rear. If this is done correctly and you still have now picture it may be an issue with the cable or the connector on the end. Check the tip to make sure that there is between 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the internal wire past the end of the connector. If this looks ok try a different hook up such as the "S-VIDEO" cable and seperate left and right audio "RCA" cable. If you have no image after trying one of the other connection types then the issue may be with the TV itself which would require servicing. Hope this helps
I hope you have Sony Picture Package Sofware CD in hand came with Camera. Pls install it and go to Sony Official website and download driver updates for Vista. Connect your handycam with your lap top and enjoy.
