Question about Garmin Nuvi 760 Car GPS Receiver

Garmin Nuvi 350 unable to read maps loaded on SD card

I have the North American 2010 map on my Garmin Nuvi 350 internal memory and loaded the Europe - Spain & Portugal map on my SD card and the map does not show up under Map Info. I've loaded pictures and songs onto the SD card and the device can load those with no issues. I tried reformatting, reloaded the maps several times. I finally deleted made room on my internal device memory and was able to fit the Spain & Portugal map, however, I'm still puzzled why the map wouldn't work via the SD card. Its a 2GB SD card and the picture and song data is accessible fine.

What was the file name on the SD card? It can not be gmapprom.img. The file name has to be gmapsupp.img. - Jim SHARCNET-USA

SOURCE: Downloading North American Maps

Did you purchase a preprogrammed sd card or did you get software to download into your PC?

If you are downloading and need to enter unlock codes, avoid using Garmin's unlock wizard.  I generally have better luck unlocking from their website.

Henry,

You cannot replace American maps with European maps.  Garmin does this in order to protect the European retailers.  The European SD card eliminates the need to load the maps into the 660, however, if you need to use the card slot to store extra data such as MP3s then you might be better off buying the 670.

SOURCE: Installed 2010 North America map in garmin Nuvi

I just got off the phone with tech support. They have a very complicated fix that involves remote accessing into your computer and editing files, etc. They said it would take over an hour and a half, I declined. The problem apparently is that the nuvi 200/205 can't support canada, but the maps contain canada = problem. and btw, i downloaded "City Navigator Lower 49 States+PR NT 2010.10, Deluxe, Apr 09" and got the same problem. this filename ends in a "B", apparently that's the "fixed one" but acc tech support it's only fixed in the sense that they can waste over an hr w' u fixing it, whereas the older files are unfixable.
I'm just gonna wait til they really fix it and upload those files.
Hope that helps.

If you have the map downloaded from the garmin website to your computer you could remove it and replace it later. However a better option might be to download the map of Europe to your computer and install it to a micro SD card. A 4 Gb card would hold the map of Europe and you don't risk losing your North America map. You can get details of how to set up the map on your micro SD card at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps
While this link is mainly about how to update your maps it has a section on setting up maps on an SD/Micro SD card also.

The micro SD card has to be between 4-8gb. Garmin Express is used to load the South American maps. Garmin Express can be downloaded from Garmin. Once installed on your PC, plug your GPS into your PC. The program should give you the option to install the South American maps to the SD card.

How to input an address that is in France?

Many Garmin units have a menu item that shows a list of installed maps. The main map is usually located on the GPS's internal memory. Any additional is likely found on the SD card.
When you access the menu / setup and choose maps, you will see both maps. Make sure that you uncheck the map in the main memory (USA perhaps?) and check the map that holds the area you wish to use (Europe?).
When you view the maps on the GPS next time, you should see the maps for the selected area and be prompted for locations that make sense for that area. Simply reverse the steps above to get back to the main internal maps when you return.
I hope this helps!

Update your unit using Garmin Webupdater. The latest updated firmware allows the units to read all sd/microsd cards You can download garmin webupdater from here: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Download install and run the program and follow the on screen prompts to update your unit.

I bought a lifetime update from Garmin a few years ago but now my nuvi 270 tells me that I don't have enough memory to install the latest maps and that I must choose only certain regions. I have an 8Gb...

The internal memory of the nuvi is full. Some maps will need to be delete before any new maps can be added. Typically, the map in the nuvi is named GMAPPROM.IMG and a map installed to an SD (or SDHC) memory card is named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

1) Remove the SD card from the memory slot

2) Connect the nuvi to the computer via USB cable.

3) Open the nuvi drive.

4) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

5) Empty the Recycle Bin.

6) Retry the map update of the nuvi.

This method will take some time to perform depending on how many map segments you are sending to the nuvi. Transferring the entire map can take over an hour. A quicker way is to send the maps to the SDHC card directly by inserting the card into a card reader. This eleminates the slow Garmin card reader from the equation and transfers are done in a fraction of the time. No maps will be on the nuvi - they will all be on the memory card instead. To update the SD or SDHC card, do this:

1) Repeat steps 1 thru 5 above. This removes the maps files from the nuvi.

2) Disconnect the nuvi from the computer.

3) Connect a card reader to the computer.

4) Insert the SD or SDHC card into the reader.

5) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

6) Update the map to the SD or SDHC card.

When either method is employed, only one map file set will result. GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of this file set. You should ensure / change the name to GMAPPROM.IMG. Any subsequent file set added should be named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks.

Add Europe sd card to Garmin 660

No. When you plug in the SD card, the Nuvi will load the map from your SD card. Once you get to the main menu, select the wrench symbol, then the map symbol and then "map info". You should see both the US and Europe map. Make sure the Europe map is checked. You can uncheck the US map. This is how you switch between maps. The reason why you have to have the extra map on the SD card is because the Nuvi can only have one map on it's internal drive, one at a time.

However, backing up your US map is a good idea.

Good luck,
- Jim

Nuvi 660 -- Loading Supplemental Maps

The best price I could find in the US for the
Euope maps was about $230 -on the internet - normal retail is $299. You have to buy and use it off the SD card, so depending on how long your trip is it might be more practical renting one, unless you want to try selling the SD card after you return.
