Question about ASUS X71SL-B2 Laptop

1 Answer

Issues with new Asus laptop.

Settings did not save on my new Asus laptop. Bran new...out of the box.. Downloaded Mozilla Firefox, addons, set personal settings, homepage etc. Shut down and logged back in an hour or two later to the original settings. Mozilla was on my desktop but when I opened it, my homepage setting did not take and none of the addons I downloaded were there.

Also...my built in webcam is messed up. My image is upside down. I can take a picture and everything but if I have to flip the image after I take it.

Last, my I threw a DVD in - new movie, not burned - and I got a msg saying I need an encoder to view dvds. I have no idea what this means.

New Asus laptop has built in webcam but the image is upside down. I can take pictures but have to flip them right side up.

I have no idea how to fix this and my owners manual does not cover the camera nor offer troubleshooting tips.

I went to the webcam..I can only access it under "Scanners and Cameras" in the My Computer section. The camera is called "USB Video Device" and I right clicked it to check properties to see if I could rotate the image but nothing like that is available. Diagnostic shows it works fine but image is still upside down. When double clicking "USB video device" a normal window pops up that allows me to take a picture but no software loads or anything. It's just a regular window like what would open if I clicked on My computer or something.

Yeah the only thing that opens up for the camera is the Wizard which is extremely basic. I have a bunch of cd's that are probably the drivers but I assumed those were already used to install everything and I wouldn't need to do anything with them.

Hmmm... it's more updates, and drivers(software) than anything.

For the Mozzila issue, first make sure you have full Windows Updates, you should have updated it to Service Pack 3(XP) or Service Pack 2(Vista) and have all current updates that it tells you to install. Combatility issues occur with software, especially browsers if you don't have certain Windows Updates installed. If you are still having issues with Mozzilla, and have updated fully. I recommend downloading from another source like filehippo.com ,uninstall the other one, and reinstall from the fresh download. If the problem persists, visit the Mozilla support site ( http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/ ) and view the FAQ and support, or contact them for further help. Good luck with that.

With the Webcam check all the settings and make sure everything is correct. Read the manual that came with the laptop as there should be one for each peice of software like the webcam, if you still can't find a solution for that, visit the manufactures website for the webcam and the software. They should have an FAQ on their site.

Yes, different DVDs come in different formats. An encoder is any software program that runs that particular format. I use SM player which covers a lot of the coding issue. http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/

You can find individual codes via Google if you know what format it is. Much like a driver, it enables your software to connect with the information from the DVD.

What is the model of the web cam built in, and what is the software or program it uses?

I will try and download the software and see at least if I am able to adjust the settings. I don't believe it would be a hard ware fault at all, but a hidden setting.

If I can't manage do that, or can't find the web cam software based on the model you will give me, If you would like I can offer remote support (Time Zones **** however) and see if I can play around with the settings there.

Otherwise, because it's new, you should go and talk to the supplier you bought it from.

It doesn't sound like you have the driver installed or are accessing the right program.

There is usually.. well.. as far as I know, always a program for any integrated web camera.

I highly recommend you check all your programs, there might be something under Acer, or Crystal eye perhaps? It wouldn't just come alone.

I apologize as I can't help as effectively because I'm not physically there.

If you would like remote assistance, please email me at grand_admiral_inzanio@hotmail.com or add me on the MSN. We will use showmypc.com and I will be able to remotely give assistance.

Wifi internet connected, internet explorer will not load web page

Get a new internet browser, download Firefox from here:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%2031.0.exe

Then make sure your computer time clock is correct, you can adjust the time and date by right clicking on the clock and then read the rest.

If that doesn't work you need to check your wifi router, you might need to unplug it for 1 minute then plug it back in.

If that doesn't work you need to check your Proxy settings in Internet Explorer. Do this by opening IE, then go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Uncheck all boxes then click Apply/Ok and exit IE and try again.

Just use Firefox, it is much better than IE, for many reasons.

I downloaded the tahoo toolbar yesterday but when i logged on this morning the toolbar was gone can you help me please?

If your browser is Mozilla Firefox 3.0 or later, just download and install the ad-ons to your browser. This is the official link for Firefox ad-ons Yahoo! Toolbar:

Mozilla firefox isn't responding.

The best solution will be a "fresh start", meaning uninstalling any addons, and uninstalling Firefox itself, then reinstalling of only the necessary software.

Alternatively, you can try reset Firefox settings to see if it helps. Read this for instructions.
Removing un-needed addons is always a warm recommendation.

Best regards,
Pelu.

I installed a addon for firefox and now firefox does not start again. it keeps saying windows:xbl error or somerthing like that. can u please tell me how to delete the file or reboot my notebook.

You need to go to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile name> (Windows Vista and Windows 7) and delete the addon, it usually has its own folder depending on the addon. For Windows 2000/XP, it would be C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile name>. If all else fails, delete the entire Mozilla folder from the Roaming folder (Windows Vista/Windows 7) or the Application Data folder (Windows 2000/Windows XP).

Mozilla Firefox didn't cloes properly, so now it

Hmm... I have had this problem before also. I ended up just reinstalling firefox. If you want to keep your plug-ins, you can choose to keep them when uninstalling firefox. Then, you can use another browser to download the firefox installer. That was actually the easiest thing I could think of doing.

How do you turn flash player on or off? i want to play games on laptop but do u need to turn flash player on to do that?

if you are using Internet Explorer, a program called Spyware Blaster has a setting that will block flash.

Spyware Blaster can be downloaded here

http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022-10196637.html
If you are using Mozilla Firefox there is an extention called Flash Block
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/433/
It will Block all Flash until you click on the arrow.
Hope this helps.

Download Vidios

First you will need firefox. Best web browser you can get.
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Once you install firefox, now you need to apply some add-ons.
There are several add-ons that will allow you to save the video stream to your hard drive. I prefer download helper, but there are others, and they work just as well.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006

most of these files are ".flv". So if you want to play them back you will need a media player that can read ".flv" files.

I like VLC:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

To enhance fire fox, try using other add-ons:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:1
