The code is not listed in the owner's manual. It isn't really an "E" but that is the closest description to what it looks like minus the top bar. So, I guess it is a cross between and "E" and a "L." However, the number is definitely a "5."

Hey all neptune stricken owners - I removed the circuit board which was darkened substantially in the resistor area, but the maytag repairman got no money this time!! . . . And the cold is no longer the problem it has been for the past couple of years. We replaced the 3 main capacitors(blue) and the cluster of four resistors(brown) - and voila - the dryer works like new!!! It only cost a few bucks ($.67, $.92 etc etc) as opposed to the $151 a new board was going to cost!

All you need to do is check the element for continuity with an ohm meter, if it has continuity the element is good. The dryer also will run on 110 volts of power but it needs 220 volts too run the element, so check and make sure all the conections on your cord are secure and that you have 220 at your wall outlet.

It sounds like your belt needs to be replaced. You're smelling the melting (burning) rubber.
