when i try to boot with cd, error says cannot boot with disk ,code 4.....when i select f8 the options come up but will not go into safe mode or any of the other options, just goes back to black and white start up screen again.

F8 works and screen shows up, but when safe mode is selected or restore or any of the other options, it goes thru the motions as if it is loading but just goes back to the previous start up screen. when start normally is selected it does the same thing, dont know any other way to explain it.

Hi

Run a chkdsk from the command prompt, once you have done this see if you can get on in safe mode and then restore it to a time before the update attempted to install

First try to boot with last know good setting if this doesn't work boot into safe mode and choose a system restore point and then retry you update again. Always be sure your laptop is plugged in when installing or doing updates, since if the battery dies in the middle of an installation or update your stuck like this.

Ok-Go to Safe Mode-any-click on start menu-run:msconfig-hit enter-click on restore option-choose date-go! If you can't do that, on boot you machine should tell you what other option you have-like"push ESC button to aces setup" or something like that. Hit that button and go to RESTORE function.Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Well you can try in safe mode with command prompt and than

To start System Restore using the Command prompt, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in safe mode with a Command prompt.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode with a Command prompt option.
  3. If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate operating system for your computer, and then press ENTER.
  4. Log on as an administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials.
  5. At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER.
  6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to a functional state.
See if that works

You have a corrupt Windows system configuration/registry. Someone else chime in if there is hope, but my only solution (given it won't start up in safe mode) is to wipe and reinstall.

what you are describing is the blue screen of death, meaning theres a hardware or software problem, try to boot into safe mode and perform a system restore, if that doesn't work use your XP cd, let it load the drivers and the ask it to fix the existing XP installation, anything that you have saved in my documents should be safe and the problem should be solved. If the blue screen reappears then you have a hardware problem
