Question about Dell Inspiron 8500 Notebook

1 Answer

Inspiron 8500 won't boot - num lock and caps lock light up

I'm at wits end with my 8500. Basically, if I turn it off I won't be able to reboot it until about a day later. If I try to turn it on before that the num lock and caps lock lights will come on and stay solid for about 10 seconds, turn off and that's it - the computer never boots.

To boot it I HAVE to wait about a full 24 hours and try again; sometimes, waiting 24 hours won't even do it. In that case I take out the battery and disconnect the computer from the power supply. Then reconnect the computer to the power supply (without the battery) and voila! it boots.

Any ideas?

Thank you Dageezer (great screen name BTW!),

I appreciate your recomendation but it did not fix the problem. Interestingly enough, the "B" DIMM slot does not work - if I insert a module into the slot the computer won't boot.

Try reseating the Memory Modules. Try each module one at a time, see if the problem is Isolated to one module or the other. They may just need to be re-seated to ensure proper contact

OK, if you have a bad DIMM slot, then it is a motherboard replacement. On an 8500, I'd replace it before I'd repair one for that issue, not cost effective.

Dell inspiron will not boot

Try this:
tap F8 on boot and go to safe mode with networking. If you are unable to load the OS is seems as thou you have a corrupted OS and will have to reload it. I hope you have backed up your data and have a recovery disk.

My inspiron 1525 won't boot, the scroll light and caps lock blink

Remove 1 stick of ram and turn on, if no! take out the second one and put back the first, and power on, if okay you know the 1 stick is bad. Remove main battery and power on, "long shot" if no change chances are it is a motherboard issue.

HP DV6110us: 4 beeps, no boot

besides the beeps which indicate a motherboard timing issue. There should be LED blinking codes given on the front LEDs. I will include the blink codes below, but lets try to at least get the system up and running. First, I would like you to remove the RAM sticks from the laptop and just reseat one stick back in the machine. Try to boot with that one stick, if it does not, try the other alone. There have been issues when reseating the ram or re-installing it have temp. fixed the issue. If it does reboot, go to the HP support site, put in your model number of your laptop and download and install an updated BIOS. Below are the blink codes that may narrow down the problem.....

Computer wont turn on their is a lock with a letter (A) blinkiing

Hi,

I use the same machine ... that light is for CAPs Lock which is on when it blinks.

I would suggest getting into the boot selection screen, by "tapping" del or F8 key while booting up & try getting into safe mode with networking & restoring teh machine to an earlier date.

Thanks
