Question about Goldstar DH504EL Dehumidifier

1 Answer

None of the control buttons work.

My Goldstar 3850A20500F Dehumidifier is stuck at low fan, 55%, 2-hour on/off cycle since I'm unable to change any setting through the control panel buttons. When I took out the PCB, it showed corrosion from water due to a poor design. I have it running with the PCB external to the unit, but even after cleaning with a contact cleaner spray, there was no improvement. I have also been unable to find a replacement PCB for it (Part # 6870A901606)

The only company, if the parts were available at all, that would have them, would be dey distributing in duluth mn, phone 218-723-1626. give them the part number and they'll look it up for you. All of my available sources tell me the part is no longer available, so you may have to replace the unit if dey can't help you. try purchasing a kenmore, they seem to work fairly well.

What settings need to be on to take water out of the air

There is usually 3 choices

As long as you hear the fan come on
& the compressor cycle, it is working

See no reason you can't try the features on the
control panel

They pretty much tell you what they are for

The dehumidifier runs and collects water. The issue is with the controls. None of them are working. In order to turn the unit off it must be unplugged.

My only guess is that there must be a relay inside the control panel that (like many relays) arced ar one time and partially welded itself in the on position. Good quality relays are plated with a high temperature melting point metal to prevent this. Being LG is Goldstar (a Korean company) they most likely use the cheapest relays. To solve this issue the relay needs a hard knock to it. (Don't hit it so hard as to break the circuit-board) :)

My goldstar dehumidifier does not shut off when full, cannot adjust the control panels

There has to be a float switch or sensor that detects the full condition. You may find that the non-functioning control panel is the cause of the problem so the next step is to find out why the control panel does not work.

Is Part # 3850A20500F one of this model? my unit

I found the model # on my Goldstar DH304 at the top of a sticker on the inside of the unit behind the bucket. Mine has stopped working too. I'm awaiting an answer to my problem but after some research it seems that unless the filter and/or coils simply need cleaned, there is lttle that can be economically repaired. Good luck.

The coils freeze up after less than a half hour of running. It does not matter what humidity setting I use or if I select the 2 hour or 4 hour run cycle. B/c the coils are freezing up, the dehumidifier...

the coils freeze up for one of two reasons .. if air flow is blocked .. sometimes by dust buildup or fan bearings needing lube .. second if the fan is working properly then ice buildup can be caused by low refrigerant levels .. the proper charge produces a steady coolness across the entire evaporator (cold coil) .. as the level drops it tends to cool a small part of the evaporator way too cold .. that creates ice .. the ice blocks the air flow and soon the whole thing is blocked ...so check the fan first .. if its running properly and there is nothing blocking air flow then suspect low refrigerant.. that requires adding a saddle valve service port to the system to allow adding refrigerant .. often the problem is caused by the fan not working at all because of lack of lube in the bearings or a bad starting capacitor ..

I don't think it's a thermistor problem, as previous respondents have suggested. I have one of these units. The control panel has been nothing but trouble. The Power button works, but the Fan Speed button is stuck on High. The Humidity Up/Down buttons only work sporadically. Sometimes they work if I keep punching them. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when they work and when they don't. I think they're just cheap parts that have failed prematurely.
