Access Really I have a 60 GB Pininfarina Portable that has worked fine until today.  When I plug it in, the light doesn't come on unless I press the USB plug into the slot hard and hold it there.  As soon as I let go, the red light goes off.

Re: Access

It sounds like you may have a problem with either your USB port or the cable that you are using.

Try plugging in another device into the USB port.  If that works without constant pressure, try using a different USB cable for your drive.

Have a Samsung G2 640GB external hard drive, have been using it fine. Just out of the blue when I wanted to access the data on it the PC (XP OS) told me it was not formatted and would I like to format it...

You might try plugging it into another USB port, then go into the control panel / administrative tools / Computer Management. If you see the Disk Name / Drive Letter in there, try right clicking it and selecting Properties from the menu. Click the Tools tab and press the button for check disk for errors. Make sure the check box is selected that says Automatically Fix File System Errors. Press ok and let it do its magic. If it finds any errors that could cause the drive to become unusable, it will attempt to fix it.
If you can't get that far, you might try plugging it into another computer if you have one. If that still doesn't work, you may have a failed device. It may be possible to recover the data on it but at a premium price with less then 40% chance of success. (It all depends if its a main board crash, head crash or physical damage to the platters)

My Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive has been working fine for a long time, today it said something was corrupted and then the computer has not picked up on the drive, when you turn it on the blue...

Sorry, but that sounds pretty bad. Generally when a hard drive bricks, its done. However you can try taking it in somewhere like the Geek Squad at Best Buy, and have them try and recover all your stored data from it. Good Luck!

XP won't recognize Simpletech Pininfarina 60 GB external hard dr

Make sure you are plugged into a USB2 port and not a low speed port.
You can Bing the device name and more than likely find the drivers at the origanial manf.
Try removing all other external devices before installing the new one.
Re-boot the unit with all disconnected.
After the until has setteled down, plug in your USB drive in the USB2 Port and see if the operating system see's the new installation.
If it is see correctly, then you can install your other devices.
Hope this helps you.
P.S. you may want to look at the jumper setting on the USB drive and set them to default.

Simpletech 500 GB Hard Drive not working

The red light is an indicator of drive failure. The fall it took, especially if the drive was on at the time, could easily cause the drive to break something internally so that it will not function. I found SimpleTech drives to fail pretty easily, even when you're not dropping them. That's been my experience, anyway.

Data recovery is a very expensive proposition. If the hard drive doesn't respond to the interface as normal, they have to be pulled apart and data extracted from the internal platters. This isn't something you can do without a full safe room (dust-free, wearing special suits and all) because any dust can ruin the platter. Since it's so involved, it's usually really, really expensive. Generally, most people don't bother when it reaches that point unless it's business files (like all of your financial data, for instance).

However, if it's something you really need that bad, DriveSavers is one of the best:

External hard drive failure

Try to use Computer Management, goto Start> Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Computer management> Disk Management. select volume or harddrive available where you want to open. If the harddrive not yet assigned a drive letter; please assign it and apply. Then right click and explore.
Hope this will be helpful, please rate my solution SOLVED!
