First, I'm not really sure that any washer contains a part called a "thingy", so I might need a little better clarification on that part to know. Is this washer a top load washer or a front load washer? What is the model number of the unit? Those bits will help me help you.

Is water supposed to enter the tub during the first half of the final spin cycle (not rinse cycle)?

no spin cycle don't have water it could be the pump is not getting the water out fast enough, could be clogged or the rear drain pipe is blocked or bent. failing them to problems it could be the valve its self.

My Whirlpool washer tub filled with water, did not spin, over flowed, and partially flooded my floor. The final spin cycle did remove the water out through the hose. How can it be fixed?

the pressure fill switch has become disengaged....remove screws holding control panel and raise it up,you will see a plastic tube has become disconnected and must be reattached to a component directly under load size selector switch, usually a rust or orangeish color, sometimes white

Simpson Esprit 700 Top Loader washer will not pump the water out

You situation could be caused by various problems. The easiest would be to check that no hoses on the drain side are kinked or plugged. This includes the tub to pump hose or the pump itself. Sometimes socks and other items can get stuck in the tub hose. Sometimes objects left in pockets can seize or hinder the pump ejection. Its sounds like if the unit is spinning and water is not ejected the above solutions should be checked first.

When washer goes to spin cycle it doesnt drain water

Remove the hose from the drain and lower the hose to a floor drain or a large bucket. If water flows, there is a failure with the pump. If no water flows there is an obstruction, such as a sock lodged in the drain path from tub to pump. Either condition will require some disassembly to repair.

A used washer I am trying to hook up . . I have the drain hose going into the floor drain. The washer fills while at the same time draining. So it never really fills enough.

Washing machines need to be drained into a standpipe. This is a drain that is about 36" off the floor. The drain line on your washer will work fine if you have it installed in a standpipe.
by putting it down into a floor drain, you're not going to allow the machine to fill. The stand pipe will allow your machine to fill and still pump the water out during spin cycle.

Make sure there's a drain hose with a hook on the top.

SPIN CYCLE WON'T DRAIN WATER FROM TUB IT RUNS ONTO MY FLOOR

Sounds like you have a bad water pump. Remove the hose going into the water pump and coming out of the pump and the pump should pull directly off the shaft check to make sure it spins freely.

Maytag washer PAV2300 water over flow

I had the same problem and went out to a website for Maytag washers. That website advised that the problem could be mechanical or electrical. In my case, the problem was a clogged tube and it took only ten or fifteen minutes to fix.
0. Unplug the machine.
1. Open up the front of the washer. Along the left hand side is a long transparent tube. The tube connects to a wallet size container on the side and near the bottom of the tub.
2. Inspect the transparent tube. It may be clogged where the tube meets the wallet sided container.
Note: When the tub is full, it creates pressure in that wallet size compartment which sends air up that tube to a pressure switch located within the panel at the top of the washer. The pressure switch flips and tells the machine - stop filling the tub with water. My machine had a visible clog in the bottom of the tube that carries the air from the bottom of the tub up to the pressure switch.
3. Disconnect the tube and clean. I used a pipecleaner to get most of the mold out. To completely clear the tube, remove the top panel and disconnect the tube from the pressure switch in the top panel and blow air down the tube.
4. Reconnect, test - and you should be good to go. If not, your pressure switch may be dead.
