I turn the computer on, it loads with icons. Then the hour glass just runs. I can't do anything. I get 2 messages. A box comes up: application error, click ok to terminate the program or click cancel to debug progam. I click ok,(hour glass still running) then there's this other box that say: please tell microsoft about the problem, debug, send error report, dont send, hour glass still running. everything just keep repeating

I would press CTRL+ALT+DEL and click on Task Manager to see what is running. You can sort by the various columns.

This sounds like a Malware/Virus problem or corrupted Windows system.

Unfortunately I cannot provide assistance because it would take a very long time, and a lot of effort on your part. I've seen problems like this with my clients.

Basically, what you would need to is a USB flashdrive, put portable anti-virus products on it, run through safe mode, and if it finds and clearns any infection, or might possibly fix the problem.

Another idea is to reinstall the your Operating System from a disk, as it might be because of corruption in the system files, by reinstalling the OS you will fix any of those problems.

However.. this process takes a lot of time, and knowledge both with using safe mode, and reinstalling the Operating System if you've never done it before. Etc

For this instance, I recommend popping it in to your local computer shop if you are willing to pay for the time - if not, then you will have to find some knowleable PC local for free.

The reason I can't help is because it's over the internet, and I need to be physically there and have all the tools to fix the problem.

This needs to be handled by a physical professional.

I hope I have been of some assistance.

Boot into safe mode you can do this by hitting the F8 key after is pases post but before the windows screen pops up select safe mode after it boots in safe mode go to start- programs -accessories-system tools and select system restore after that box opens select restore my system to an earlier time go back to before this problem started and select a date hit ok and it should do the rest

What does it mean when there's an hour glass on the display? It stopped running last night and there's an hour glass?

It means ''wait'' (seriously).

The question is: ''why is it displaying that message?''

If it is _still_ displaying that message. Try unplugging it for 24 hours.

If after that it _still_ displays that message, you may have a bad computer board.

Checking disk for error message

Sounds like your computer is running the built in "chkdsk" program which checks your hard drive for errors. This program can sometimes take over an hour. I would plug the laptop into power and let it run its course. If it takes longer than an hour or two, you may have a failing hard drive.

I try to click on find frieds and the hour glass

What that mean is that there are a lot of people on facebook. If you wait 5 to 10 minutes then try again. If that does not fix the issue. You might have a virus or trojan. What you need to do is do a virus scan on your computer. Why this would slow your computer down is because those two things can use you internet and slow everything with the internet. Thank you for using Fixya

Computer locked up and can't get into anything

Try starting in safe mode and remove the offending program.

  1. Start the laptop
  2. After the Dell Screen vanishes begin pressing F8
  3. You will get a Windows Startup Screen
  4. Select SafeMode and press enter twice
  5. Windows should load up
  6. Go into Control Panel Add Remove Programs
  7. Remove the anti virus software and anything else you suspect maybe causing grief.
  8. Restart the laptop normally and see what happens.
  9. Hopefully by now you will be able to go back and do the factory imaging.

Can't store anything lately

Hi, did you format the flash drive? If you are using windows, right click on the drive and select "Format...". You can repeat the operation a few times. If it's working, try to add your resume again. How old is the drive? Good luck!
