Question about Emerson MW8779W Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave went blank when I hit defrost... not working; no even clock.

Emerson MW8779W YR2000- I use this all the time. Tonight the clock was on per usual when I went to defrost something, which I hardly ever do... I just "cook". The microwave just "died", nada, all blank. The outlet is working as I did check. I had no warning so is it a fuse/fixable? I loved this unit as it has worked fine almost daily since I purchased it yrs ago. If I need to buy another, I have seen reviews that are not saying good things about this model... many report a similar issue. I am in an apt. & I need one that does not take more power as a fuse will blow. I can not seem to find the amp. usage. Can you tell me that by any chance? I do not know if all 800 watt microwaves draw the same amount of power. I do not want to purchase one that is heavier on the juice... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Microwave went blank when I hit defrost... not...

This will probably use a 15A ceramic fuse and will draw about 13 amps when running.

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the thermostat to open. When it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again. This may mean you'll need a new magnetron.

If it's random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or fuse holder.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

Where can I find a replacement tray for an Emerson microwave MW8779W?

I've checked the places where I normally get parts, and also checked online. It looks like the manufacturer no longer supplies the original part. This means you either need to replace the oven, or see if a suitable tray for another oven might be available. This site is often mentioned as a good place to check, although I've never tried them myself. You could also check for appliance service shops or parts stores in your area that might be able to supply a generic tray that might work.

Good luck on your search and thanks for using Fixya!

When pushed, the 30 sec button says 3 minutes. none of the display buttons work.

Have you inadvertently programmed your microwave for "autostart"?
Your model microwave has the ability to be programmed to go on at any given time of the day/night, even when you're not home so that you can have a defrosted and cooked meal waiting for you when you get in.
I know that if you hit the 30 sec button or the minute button when your micro is programmed to autostart it will tell you the time that it's programmed to autostart or the amount of time that's left for it continue cooking.

Have you tried unplugging it for a few minutes?
This should clear it's memory and then all you'll have to do is set the time on the regular clock if you want.

Here's where you can download and read your owners manual for further instructions on how to use the autostart feature and everything else:

Plastic foot. I'm missing one out of four. Emerson Model MW8779W. Need one. Can you help?

Sadly, no. You may find a similar one at Lowe's/HomeDepot/similar, or you may want to remove the other three and replace all of them with the same type. Would those stick-on felt dots work for you?

I have an Emerson Microwave Oven MW8997W and cannot change the hour (time) on my clock. How do I change the clock? Debbie

If your keys do not work at all, you probably have a bad keypad, in which case I'd ask you to reply back. In the meantime:

When the microwave oven is plugged into an outlet,
the oven will display " 0:00 "

1. Press the CLOCK button; the hour digit will blink
and the clock indicator will light.

2. Press the number keys to set current hour.

3. Press the number keys to set current minute.

4. Press AM/PM to choose AM or PM.

5. Press the CLOCK button again; the display will
show the present time. After the clock has been set,
the time will appear with blinking colon, unless
the oven is cooking or defrosting.

You can actually download your owner's manual here
