Our GPS doesn't stay on. It will come on for a minute than it shuts off. We have charged it and it will do that even when its plugged in.

Why does my tom tom keep going the shut down page every 10 seconds I have pressed reset but makes no difference I ride bmw r1200rt

One possible cause is that your battery is low or the battery can no longer hold a (good) charge. In this case, the TomTom is shutting down because there's not enough battery to keep it running, even though it is plugged into a power source.

To determine if the battery is the cause, try to charge the TomTom battery .... using a (USB) connection to your computer, or a direct power source (i.e. while the TomTom is not being used). Let it charge for a few hours until the batter charge indicator shows that it is fully charged (or just leave it charging overnight).
Then, unplug the TomTom from the "charger" and power it up. If the TomTom (battery) doesn't hold a (good) charge, the device will shut down within a few minutes, e.g. 10 mins or much less.
When you (then) plug the device into a power source, and it doesn't stay on (i.e. it keeps shutting down after 10 seconds), you can safely conclude that the battery is the cause of your problem.

I have a magellan 4370. I plugged it in to charge but as soon as I unplug it it shuts off. When plugged into the wall, it shows that the battery is charging but the battery doesn't take the charge. ...

I have several gps, and have worked on them as well. I also currently have a megellan , I have found out over the years that the batteries they use in 99 percent of the gps are ****. Even with my extensive background in electronics, I have replaced interior battery with top of the line one, At first it last for a couple hours, then one hour and eventually about 15 minutes . My total professional advice, consider your self lucky, you have one of the best gps brands out there, draw back, battery is poor. Just enjoy it in your car, plugged in your cig lighter. It's funny how these low budget throw away tom-tom,s have better battery, but gps is junk. So at least you have a superior gps. Please rate this post, if I have helped you, keep me updated on any other questions. Thanks mike

My garmin nuvi 255w keeps freezing up at loading maps screen...i have tried the hard reset but that doesn't work, when i push on the bottom right corner and start the gps, it doesn't even make it...

There is a hard reset button under the sticker at the bottom of the unit. It is located directly under the check mark on the sticker. Once you get it going fully charge the unit then go to the Garmin website and register and update your 255w. I will attach the link to the Garmin Site. Thanks for using FixYa

I neglected to plug in the cord to my cigarette lighter and the charge ran down to 0.I am on a trip and did not bring the charging cord. i tried plugging into lighter in car but it stays on for a feww...

leave it switched off and plugged in.

This would give it chance to actually charge as using it from dead with it plugged in does not always allow some GPS to charge properly.

You neglected to say which brand so its hard to give a 100% answer.

Most GPS should have enough charge withing 4 hours but from dead some older units require anywhere up to 18 hours according to some of the manuals i have laying around

The gps automatically shuts off after few minutes

When you turn the unit on and get to the screen showing Where To?, View Map and Travel Kit look on the upper right hand corner of the display and make sure you see the battery icon all green. If it is not then the battery is not charged

It will not stay on even when plugged into a power source. It shuts down while loading the maps (about 5 seconds).

Check to make sure the rear mini USB port isnt loose or broken. That will prevent the battery from charging or working on an external power source. See this link:

My magellan roadmate 1212 will not stay on unless plugged into

if its not charging the battery, the meter will say full even though the battery is dead..its a very common problem with alot of gps with the usb as a charging port. my solution is if this is still under warranty, i would send it back to magellan or where ever you bought it, because sooner or later the usb port is going to totally fail and wont even start up if plugged in and your going to be left with an expensive paper weight.

Why will my GPS not stay on?

Have you fully charged it and is it continuously plugged in and still switching off? The internal battery in not good on GPS units and I always keep mine plugged into my cigar lighter to power it. When I finish a journey I leave it plugged in and charging when I dont need it-if driving locallly etc.
