There are two types for Hrd Drive on Desktop PC's. IDE & Serial ATA. The IDE cable is a ribbon like cable with 40 pins. The SATA use two cables one for power, the bigger and the other is for data. The easiest to upgrade is adding the SATA drive for Storage. More complicated, reinstall windows or cloning the drive, Recommend Acronis.

Google pictures for SATA motherboard and compare yours if you will need a PCI card in order to add the new Hard Drive.

For some strange reason the HP website does not allude to which drive came with your machine. I would assume that information is in your original shipping manifest, but the site does offer a video or instructions on how to change your hard drive, just remember you will have to "clone" your old drive to the new one so all your features will be enabled in your system.

Take a look at this:

Internal hard drives should only be opened in a clean room. If I understand you correctly this drive is bound to fail. Suggestion: Start moving files onto other space.

yes you can upgrade your hard drive but still on ATA,if you upgrade in SATA you need some converter from ATA to SATA .and since it's a laptop i think its hard to do that thing.

Can i make my 80GB hard drive to 100GB? 80GB 7200rpm SATA SAMSUNG

This is not possible, 80Gb is 80Gb and 100gb is 100gb, but I am afraid, even if you like to replace, you'll not be able to get 100gb since it's no a standard Hard disk capacity. If you are trying to upgrade, then you can find 120gb, 160gb, 250gb, 320gb etc... Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa.

if the drive installed is a SATA then it should be a straightforward exchange. to get it formatted after installation r click on the drive letter in explore and format and install windows. You will not see this drive in DRIVES in CTRL PANEL like you would in a normal drive.

Switching from 40GB IDE HDD to 500GB SATA HDD. SATA won't boot.

Hi there
No there is no need to change any jumpers on a sata drive, go into the bios settings and tell the bios to boot from the western digital drive only.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!!

This laptop uses a SATA hard drive. From what I see the max on those is 500gb. If I was to make a recommendation, Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA Notebook Hard Drive $107.
