I have an old record player. It was made in the 80's according to my mom. I have recently started to use it( it hasn't been used since 86). With the exception of 45s, the record player will only play side one of the vinyl. The other side makes strange noises and the turntable eventually stops turning. This is on both used record and records that have never been opened.Do I need to replace something?

I must say I have never come upon a record deck that will only play one side of a good condition record!
The only action I can suggest is to replace the belt if it's a belt driven deck. Please make a note of how it fits before removing the belt. But why any record deck would treat a new record any different on one side than the other will be a mystery to any good engineer.
The only exception would be if the deck played one side good then played up on every other record. Till it's switched off for a while, then repeats this action.
The cause of this fault would be a part overheating the longer the deck is left on. When you stop it to turn over, the system fails. This is however more likely to happen on a direct drive turntable, not a belt driven one.

SOURCE: Arm does not track properly but skips across records

Just guessing, but it sounds like you haven't counterbalanced your tone arm.  When a tone arm skips, it's usually because there's too much counter weight on the rear of the tone arm.  You want between 3-5 grams, but first you have to calibrate your tone arm (balance it so you know where zero is).  If you don't know how to do this, refer to the Ion directions called "Tonearm Setup" in the instructions.

SOURCE: using mac with the ion turntable to record

Funny thing about analog to digital recording without a preamp. You will record a signal, but that signal might be below the level of human audibility, if the line levels are left at the level that left the turntable, given the absence of a PREAMP.

SOURCE: everything works on my record player but my turntable doesnt spin

This happened to me tonight. I had the same problem, to activate the player on you need to move it to the right until you hear a click. If you don't do it it won't start. Even if all the power is on. This should fix everything!

SOURCE: Digitech turntable - skipping stylus and arm

You might need to apply more pressure to the stylus. There should be a weight on the end of the arm, it should have a control to move it up and down. The only other thing is the stylus damaged from transit?

RECORD PLAYER PROBLEMS

Belt is to small or tight--exact belt type on capstan is required--if the old belt works at all try putting it back. Not many DVD players use belts much anymore.

A cdr630 twelve years old will not record on any blank discs optical fail on maxell tdk and all brands.do you know what discs i can buy for this machine.marantz state discs with a green dye but i cannot...

The manual states that 74 minute 650MB 1-4X disks run best; my machine would not burn anything I had, eventually I found 650MB crrw's on ebay for as cheap as 2 cents a piece, I have a fair number of them and so far every single one has worked. Imation 800Mb cd's seem to work 80% for me.

Hello i have a Philips cdr 870. With every blank CD inserted, the display shows NO AUDIO. Pre recorded CDs play OK. Unable to record. I have recently aquired this machine and this is the first time I have...

You are probably inserting blank computer discs, eg 650 or 700mb rather than blank music CD-R or CD RW`s which this machine is designed to work with. The correct discs are labelled "music audio" or 80 minutes. You can only use these types of discs. Why? When these recorders first came out, it was a way of battling piracey in copying discs. I believe there is a "hack" to enable this player to use blank computer discs.

RECORD DROP OUT

Just bought this CDR 570 and not use yet.

Reading the instruction manual - yes, life experience has taught me some really useful stuff! -

Under 'Discs for recording' on page 7 it says at end of section

IMPORTANT:
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of PHILIPS audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only'
Roughly translated I read this to me - 'don't blame us if the set don't work using other (non-compatible) discs' !!
