Question about HP Compaq Presario 2500 HP Pavilion ZE 5000 NX9010 Series (chassis bottom)319470-001 (319470001) CD-ROM Drive

I have a compaq presario 2500. One day it gave a black screen with the message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\windows\system32\config\system" I have inserted the CD: Compaq Operating System CD, went to the recovery console screen, however it does NOT prompt me for any type of password, and I get a C: prompt. Any command that I have tried it does not recognize...therefore all the responses are "The path or file specified is not valid."

    For the 3rd line, do I type that in directly as I have put it in quotations?

    "copy *.* c:\windows\system32\config\"

    Should I be using the "compaq operating system cd" or the actual Windows XP home edition (which I suspect belongs to my desktop that I'm using)

    sorry--I have another question pertaining to the repair install. On a blue screen, it is asking me about partitions---that I need to select one. Partition 1 [unknown] 57224 MB <57223 MB free> and unpartitioned space 8MB. I just hit "enter" to install, and the installation failed. Any advice on that one?

    It will not let me delete the partition, and prompts me with a smaller blue screen that states "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" It goes on to make sure I have adequate disk space, disabling BIOS memory options, and restarting it in safe mode.

    I'll start over in the morning.....hopefully if my kids cooperate. Thanks for all your help. At this point, I'm just thinking of replacing the hard drive, hopefully I can find one locally. I need it (IF i can fix it :) up and running by a bit of a time crunch. Would replacing the hard drive basically fix any issues? I did back up the files at one point on my external hard drive---so hopefully I can figure out how to get to them. Good nite, we're an hour behind you--but I'm still tired. :)

I see

On the c promtp you need to type the following:

cd windows (press enter)
cd repair (press enter)
copy *.* c:\windows\system32\config\

The repair files should be copied.

type exit (press enter)

the computer restarts, take the cd out and see if it works normally now.

    well if we can't use the recovery console then you need to perform a repair installation of windows to the computer.

    Well, try the compaq, if it doesn't work use the windows xp cd. you should have the product key on the case of the computer so the xp cd should also work.

    Seems like the hard drive contents are corrupt, the hard drive may have failed, Try to delete the partition, it says on the screen what button to press to delete. Ones its deleted install into the empty space - this wont be a repair installation since it doesn't seem to be possible as the hard drive appears to be corrupt or damaged.

    if the installation fails you may have to replace the hard drive.

    here is the service manual for your laptop.

    page 39 shows how to replace the hard drive.

    The laptop takes 20 to 60GB Hard drive.

    If your not able to delete the Unknown partition and then do a fresh installation of windows to the computer the hard drive is most like crashed - failed. The files might be recoverable at a data recovery professional.

    If you want to be completely sure you should take the laptop to a local professional, we can do some test over the internet.

    now the error message that comes up when you try to delete the hard drive, is very likely caused by a faulty hard drive, had a similiar case recently.

    OR since the error is related to memory it could be a faulty ram module on the computer. We can test the ram with a cd if you have a cd burner on your computer.

    And you can get the iso burner needed to burn the software to a cd from here

    ones you have burned the cd, restart the laptop with the disc in the drive, same way as the windows setup start, you should now get the memtest program, let it run a full test, it may take a hour or two, if errors come up the issue is most likely the ram on the computer. They can be replaced more info on that in the service manual replacement section.

    Depending on the results of the memtest if you are getting errors, you could open up the laptop and remove the other memory module if it has two, if it has just one memory module then thats faulty.

    if you had two you could take the other out and test it alone, if errors still come up take the other one out and place the other one back in to test both separately, the one that comes up with errors is faulty.

    well it seems like the hard drive isn't working, well you should test the memory just to be sure.

The "Win32 config" system folder and the files within it are crucial to the Windows Operating System's stability. If any of these files become damaged or corrupted, you likely receive error messages. Fortunately, Microsoft puts the files to repair these problems on the installation CD that comes with your operating system. The original install disk offers a quick way to repair the system. Damaged files are replaced in only a few minutes.

Insert your Windows CD into the computer drive. Restart your computer. On startup, look for the message, "Press any key to boot from CD" and press "Enter" on your keyboard. You should see the blue "Welcome to Setup" screen. Click "Enter" on the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Read the "Microsoft Software License Terms," then press "F8." Use your arrow keys, go down and select the Windows installation you want to repair. Press "R" for "Repair." Windows will now start to restore the Win32 System to your computer.

To repair missing NTLDR or corrupted system file/s, boot up with the Windows installation CD then - Press R to repair when instructed. Press 1 or Enter to repair the C:\Windows folder. Then type chkdsk /r and then press Enter. The repair process will take quite a long time.

Dear, If you are having a backup disc that can help you. Or have a cd of the os you are using and repair your windows. Or simply re-install or format your Laptop.

Is this XP?
Do you have the XP cd or the recovery cd's. This needs to be fixed by performing a Windows repair.
missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system"means that the OS,XP, is missing an essential file to run.
Or it could mean that your hard drive is failing. Is the hard drive noisey?

Having problems with my compaq Persario 2500

this problem occurs when you try to update drivers in the computer..sometimes windows XP cannot update the driver and that corrupts system.ini file as it has a lot of bad entries..Due to this you will get this error mesage..No its not due to virus.its due to an attempt to change system.ini file

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

That means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted.

There are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn't always work, and then there is the hard way.

Easy Way --- Note that this doesn't always work.
When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test.

Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select "Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration".

It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files.

If that doesn't work, there is the next step....the hard way.

Hard Way
Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to good old DOS.

First, we will recover the System Hive.

Now, type in the following commands with pressing Enter after each line.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Be very careful when you are typing in these commands, one wrong move, and you have, broken Windows XP.

Also, change the C in the commands to whatever your Windows XP drive letter is.

Attempt to boot the system, if it doesn't boot, get back into the Recovery Console and do the following commands.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software

System file is "missing or corrupt"

You MUST use the installation bootup disk to install windows it is the only way........... NOT THE RECOVERY DISK this is a MUST. Allow it to go through the motion of installing Windows until it cannot go any further. Then press the "R" key for the console. When in the DOS screen TYPE ... chkdsk /p Windows will repair itself and then you will recover all your data it should be back to normal.
