Replacing NON Manufactored ink cartridges in EPSON PHOTOS STYLUS R380

I bought MANY ink cartridges to replace the original "Very expensive" Epson ink cartridges for my printer and now the printer states that it doesn`t recognize the cartridges and to re`install them. I have tried this 20 times and it is still saying the same thing. The printer will not work until I fix this problem. :( ???????????????????

I didn`t mention in my question that the printer is an EPSON stylus photo R380

  • Anonymous Mar 19, 2014

Original cartridge worked, got low, puled it out, put in a non-Brother cartridge, and it was not recognized. Looking for a hack to get around the printer not recognizing it. I placed black tape on the original one and am using that as a short term fix.

I had the same problem, was tired of Spending $100 / refill - so I tried a set of Generics that were "Guaranteed" to work - well - they didn't. Apparently Epson changes the programming on the ROM on the actual ink cartridge - and if you buy an older generic cartridge it will not work if you have a newer printer - as the ROM coding is incorrect.

I do however, have a solution - that I found works. Continuous Ink Systems. I went to Super Jet USA ( - and purchased their continuous ink system. I think it was 60 bux and it comes with 100ml of ink in each color + 18 ml in each continuous cartridge (so 118ml in total for each color) (Regular cartridges only have 18 ml). So the equivelant of just over 6 refills... Normally - 6 sets of Epson (rip off super high price make someone rich) cartridges would cost me roughly $720.00 with taxes and what not.

This system Cost me 60 bux + shipping.

Now I am not a mathamatician, a numerologist, or anyone who things long division is fun (thats just sick) - but I dont think it takes a genius to see this is one TERRIFIC deal.

And yes - The system works PERFECTLY in my Epson R380 Printer - first try - no fuss - no muss - Extremely happy I tried this solution

NOTE: I do not work for, or am in any association with Superjetusa - I just think when you find a company that is good to deal with, delivers what they promise, and gives you a good price - then you should tell the world.

Actually, I had the exact same situation, I went to SuperJet USA per cueball1967's suggestion by purchasing their cartridge. Well, let me just put it this way, I will NEVER go back to them, EVER again. Not only did their ink have leaked and spilled all over the inner boxes when they've arrived, when I asked for a new toner replacement due to the spill before arrival, their customer service representative had refused to my request without given me further explanation and just hung me up, twice, before I was explaning to her about the situation. OK, fine, I'll get over it and start use the rest of the cartridges. Guess what happen next? It is unrecognizable by my printer, and the second cartridges LEAKED inside my brand new Epson printer. So given a logical guess, the first leaked printer was not to blame on the UPS, but SuperJet USA.

SUCKED customer service
Bad cartridge quality
UNSTABLE return & refund policies

OVERALL: NEGATIVE exprience with Super Jet USA.

Hi im jules_09,apparently it will not work because every copier orprinter has its own designated ink cartridges.or even the ink will not work on it goes to all copiers and printers that do not use a imitation of toner or ink or youll have problem with the machine if you want it to work just transfer the new ink into the old cartridge,re use only the cartridge but remember that compatile ink and toner can ruin the operation or even cause big problem to the machine

Turn the printer off, take out the cartridges, turn the printer on, reinstall cartridges. Printer reads cartridges as new.

Why this happens? I don't know if the rumors are true but check out this website and you'll find out.

Changing Ink Cartridges

I'm assuming you are using originals. I would suggest you taking the cartridges out and re-inserting them. If you are using refilled cartridges and you used the cartridges to almost empty then probably the chip may have short circuited rendering the chip useless. If you bought remanufctured cartridges I suggest you ask them for replacements. This isn't really that high tech but I hope this helps.

Using non-OEM ink

There are epson ink compatible cartridges in the market that are less expensive but have good quality. Please look for other compatible brands which good quality guaranteed, try those compatible brands which are more popular.

Highly possible that the "compatable" cartridges are not really compatable or that Epson has updated software or firmware to keep them from working. Try replacing with Epson cartridges or see if the non-OEM brand seller has a resetting device so the printer sees those cartridges as full.
