Question about Car Audio & Video

Subwoofer Trouble I have Rockwood Fosgate amp and subs. I have a box near the steering wheel that controls how much bass puts out on my subs. There is a little light that is on when the subs on but it goes on and off every minute. My subs are on and when the volume is turned up the light turns off and the subs dont work. I dont know what to do. I tried wiggling the ground wire but it still does not stay on. What do I do and whats wrong?

Turn the bass gain all the way down., Turn up your your volume on bass test song. Crank up the little box next to the steering wheel wide open . Now go gradually turn up the bass gain on the RF amp until you get distortion. Turn the gain down slightly. Now you can enjoy playing the bass from one end of the little boxes setting to the other without ovrloading your amp and subs. Open a can of whoopass on anyone who tries to crank up on your gain.

I was given a subwoofer and box but do not know where to go from here in terms of hooking it up in my car. It is a Rockford fosgate punch p112s4.

First youll need an amp. Depending on what size the sub is a 500 watt rms amp can hold up to about a 300 watt kicker. If your looking for something bigger u can get a 1000 watt amp and hook up two 300 watt kickers. To hook up the amp youll need a car amp power cable, power control cable, speaker wire, amd a car amp ground wire. They usually sell kits that run aboyt 40 bucks. The power cable goes to the batter as well as the ground cable. The power control cable goes to the back of the head unit. (You will kost likely need a more modern headunit if urs is stock). Once this is done put the sub in the box (i recomend super glue because metal nails take away from the bass). Put the speaker wire to the speaker positive on left negative on right. Same with the amp. And now ur bumpin ;)

Fosgate 1500 amp settings

low pass of course set the crossover around 80Hz. Then turn the bass down to around 35% on headunit and the volume all the way up on your head unit just below distortion. slowly turn the amp gain up until you start to hear distortion, then turn it back down until it's completely gone. Then, lower the gain just a little more to make sure you keep out the distortion on all songs. From here you should be good. If the gain is still to high. The adjust to your taste. Just don't move the bass up on the headunit or the gain past your distortion point.

You probably have too much hooked up for the size of your power supply which is presumably a small car battery. You either need to get:

A) New, better bigger battery.
B) Capacitor in series with battery.
C) Both of the above.

check the amp. the "switches" gain, bass boost...etc they might be over powering your subs and heating them up. if those are fine then you mite want to try your subs on another migt just be that the subs are easily over heating.

My amp is protecting unessacarily when ran at 2 ohms

are you factoring the ohm rating from running them parallel?

2 x 2o subs parallel = 0.5 ohm (lowers ohm's)

2x 2oh subs series = 4 ohm

IT is posable that you are calculating the ohm rating fine, BUT some SUBS can reach lower ohm rating while hitting bass- i didnt know this till i had a rather insane sub that would dip to 1ohm while hitting hard bass causing my amp to go into protect mode.

Hello again ronnieyannon,

It's probably best to allow the amp that is powering the subs to control the frequencies going to the sub(s). I would not use the lpf on both the head unit and the amp in any case. The control settings are not completely precise and you could end up with a lot of tweaking between the units to get the sound you want. I'd send full range to the amp and with it playing something with a lot of bass, set the 401s to "LP", the crossover slope to near maximum, and then adjust the frequency until it sounded best to me. Starting on page 11 of your manual are the Rockford-Fosgate recommended adjustment procedures, including setting the gains and the filter frequency.

Those numbers for the lpf on your head unit sounds like it allows you to decrease (-24dB), as well as increase (+6dB) the bass at the specific frequencies of 50, 63, 80 and 100Hz. You probably don't want to decrease the bass boost for subs. And the 401s will allow a boost up to 12dB and is variable from 50-250Hz.

Hope this helps.

alot of times its not just the amp that gives you better sounding bass.. A lot has a to do with a few other factors as well.. first off your subwoofer.. the bigger the subwoofer the deeper the bass. Some woofers exturde, or flex differently depending on the quality and structure of the woofer.. 2nd is gonna be the sub box. different size boxes will give your sub diff. depths of bass. ... general idea is the bigger the box deeper the bass. But if your woofer is not supplied enough power a big box is useless.   With that size amp your best bet is too run a single woofer. Probably a 10inch woofer would sound the best.. but it in.75cub inch. sealed box.. should sound great.
